Number 4 died; she seemed a wee bit dull last night and died at some point during the night. Poor wee critter. It's a bit odd looking at the box and not seeing her - she was the grey one and really stood out.

I watched Persuasion and had mixed feelings. I loved the music and how they really managed to get a palatable sense of regret. I didn't ( Read more... )

Poor little ones.
Let's hope the last one will pull through, then.

Oh - I might not have been clear! Only one of the kittens died - I've been calling them by their numbers instead of giving them names so I don't get as attached (admirable theory, not sure its working!) So it was the 4th kitten to be born that died, as opposed to 4. Bad, but better that 1 died than 4.

Well, the only consolation is that it might be easier for the mum having 4 kittens instead of 5 - 5 is towards the maximum of kittens. When all 5 wanted fed at the same time there was barely room for them all, so one would invariably be sitting on top of others. Not too much of a consolation, but some.

I'm so glad I wasn't right! :)

Yeah, I understand; more milk for each one too.

It's such a shame - she was a lovely sweet, quiet (and cute as hell) wee thing. Bloody Mother Nature.

I think dead and dying kittens are quite possibly the worst thing this world has to offer. It's the reason why I had to stop working at the RSPCA anyway - it just got too heartbreaking.

Once upon a time, long long ago, I wanted to be a small-animal vet. I could have done it - not squeamish, etc (have had hand up cow's bum, etc.) but realised I couldn't put an animal down that was in perfect health. A dying animal, that's a bit different, but couldn't put an animal down just for it having no owner. Living on a farm has made me a bit more pragmatic about things, but dead and dying pets really really gets to me. It is so very heartbreaking, and almost puts me off pets completely.

Oh, poor kitten - and poor you. Still, you're right, perhaps a bit less work for mum (not that that's any consolation, but anyway...)

Not much of a consolation, but some. These things happen, I guess. Just a shame it does.

I really like your description of regret -or not regret, just the strange way life turns out sometimes. like no matter what plans you make, life has a way of doing it differently. it's interesting, i suppose. strange though.
