Thanks! Lovecraft's probably another acquired taste, if you haven't acquired it already...

I've not read any Lovecraft; I was thinking I might after reading this.

You kept it well-paced and atmospheric throughout.

Oh, the pacing and atmosphere probably belong to Lovecraft. I don't like to claim credit for anything except mimicry and adaptation in any of these stories; I'm leaning far too much on the originals, especially in this particular one. I am glad you enjoyed it! Lovecraft is a very dense and, aha, distinctive writer (you won't find many people using words like 'nefandous' or 'quondam' -- I didn't manage to get the latter in here, alas), and probably (like Dunsany) not for everyone. But he really did leave his mark on the genre. I don't think very many of his stories are available on the internet, unfortunately -- at least I couldn't find any of the major ones when I went looking for the sake of this tale. There's The Cats of Ulthar, which reads to me rather as though it was written in Lovecraft's earlyish Dunsany-influenced phase; the ones I cited here are really classic Lovecraft.
