Author's Notes: Chuck POV! One Day I will sit down and write a proper Chuck fic because he deserves it.
He doesn’t mean to walk in on them.
Really, who would mean for something like that to happen. It had just been an unfortunate set of circumstance. It had been Colonel Sheppard screaming in his ear to get Doctor McKay to the control room stat and Chuck had to listen because the Colonel had started turning red and had that worried look on his face and technically he’s kind of Chuck’s boss, but also really not, but still, crisis situation and they kind of did need McKay.
So he’d hailed and re-hailed and tried all the available radio channels and still nothing all the while Sheppard had turned redder, face grimier and it’s not like McKay could be lost inside the city no matter what the attack, but he’d wanted McKay there and now.
Chuck’s not stupid. He knows an order when it’s been given to him.
Which is how he had found himself racing down the halls of Atlantis and pretty much bursting into McKay without so much as knocking.
And this is how he walks in on them.
They’re not doing anything, just cuddling and they look really peaceful and Chuck stops short of yelling McKay at the top of his lungs.
It hadn’t been a really well thought out plan to begin with, all things considered. McKay likes his space and it’s taken Chuck forever to get in his good graces. There had been months of him just snapping his fingers whenever he’d tried to talk to Chuck, no name, just fingers and, on one terrible occasion, McKay had called him Grodin.
He’d apologized fiercely for it, all red face and bumbling words and Chuck had patted him on the shoulder and had said, it’s okay, I get it. McKay had frowned, but nodded his head and had told Chuck to go back to work.
Chuck even remembers the first time that McKay had called him Chuck. Team Sheppard had come in, drunk or high on alien substances or something and Teyla had giggled and Sheppard had guffawed that horrible donkey bray and Ronon had told him that Chuck had been a totally better technician than that weird dude from Earth.
And McKay… McKay had slung his arm around Chuck’s shoulders and called him Chuckie D and tried to ruffle his hair, but his balance had been off and he’d totally missed Chuck’s hair and almost poked him in the eye.
At that point, Doctor Keller had carted them all off, Colonel Carter shaking her head in that oh so familiar manner that Doctor Weir used to do and Major Lorne looking on with bemusement twinkling in his eyes while Doctor Zelenka had stood there, mouth agape and staring off at them.
“Pain killer ma’am?” Chuck had asked.
“Not a big enough pill in the world, Chuck.” She had said.
So Chuck had taken a long time to get into Rodney McKay’s good graces and he doesn’t want to ruin it.
Except…
“Oh my god.” He says, startled.
He watches as McKay snuffles and Major Lorne jumps up, hand going to his gun that’s sitting conveniently on the night stand. He straightens quickly and trains in on Chuck and Chuck just stands there startled because really, what the hell, this isn’t’ in his job description.
He bets the weird guy from Earth doesn’t have to deal with this kind of shit.
Although he’s weird and Chuck kind of likes the pats on the back that Ronon gives him whenever he’s in the mess hall and the way Ronon pretty much kicked the ass of that one guy that had called him short.
But back to the point.
“What the hell Sergeant?” Lorne says.
His voice is still very sleep addled and his eyes are barely opened, but Chuck knows he’s good shot and he hasn’t lowered his gun yet and Chuck takes a deep breath.
“Um… there’s a problem in the control room and Doctor McKay is needed.” Chuck says hurriedly.
He hears Colonel Sheppard in his ear now asking for a report and he thinks they’re about five minutes away from a Marine squadron that everyone wants to avoid.
Or at least the three people in this room… even if one of them is asleep.
“So you just barge into people’s rooms in the middle of the night?”
“I tried hailing him on the radio, but he didn’t answer. Colonel Sheppard ordered me down here to get him. In fact, he’s trying to get in connect with McKay right now and he doesn’t seem to happy about it.”
He sees it finally click for the Major and he starts pushing and McKay, gently and McKay wakes up, cut of snort and he glares at Lorne.
“You’re needed in the control room.” Lorne says.
“What? Is it life or death?’
“No, but I think the Colonel might just blow a gasket if you don’t get there. Soon.”
McKay looks up and sees him standing there. His mouth opens a few times and he tries to say something, but the Major is helping him out of the bed and hurriedly getting him dressed and Chuck resolutely does not look.
When McKay’s ready, the Major pushes him out the door and Chuck follows close behind.
“You’re not…”
“It’s not my military regulation.” Chuck mutters.
“It could still…”
“It’s not like no one knows already McKay.”
McKay frowns.
“Who…”
“Everyone seems to think its Colonel Sheppard, but that’s kind of stupid. Not that the Major is the obvious choice or whatever but anyone with eyes…”
“Yes, yes, okay, I get it. You knew. You’re not going to tell anyone.”
“Sergeant?”
“Yes Colonel.”
“You got McKay with you?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Great, now get your asses over here and fix this problem. Colonel Carter is starting to get worried”
“No problem sir.”
“He’s a real pain in the ass sometimes.” McKay grumbles.
“Yes, he is sir, but you can’t really blame him. Word is he still feels kind of uncomfortable around Colonel Carter.”
“Has to have a pissing match with her is more like it.”
“Some say he needs to get laid. They’ve even started a list.”
“Do you know all the gossip on Atlantis?”
“Only the stuff worth repeating.” Chuck says.
He sits up in the control room all day. Does McKay think he just sits up there doing nothing? He does have total access to the comm system after all.
Not that he’d every abuse it.
“You could be one scary man, Chuck”
Chuck smiles.
“I only use my powers for good sir.”
“I don’t know if that makes me feel comforted or not.”
Chuck nods and thinks about the way they’d been curled up around each other and how McKay’s first question had been to make sure Chuck wasn’t going to say anything and everyone thinks Katie and says Katie this and Katie that and Chuck had empirical proof that whatever with Katie is whatever.
What’s going on with Major is the real thing.
“Feel comforted.” Chuck says.
“I like you Chuck.”
“Thanks. You’re a good man too. Now, crisis situation.”
“Ah, two words you hear too much of in Atlantis.”
Chuck smiles.
“It’s like our catch phrase.”
