Nick sits quietly in the shadows near the head of the bed as the nurse goes about her business, still and silent. They'd tried to remove him hours ago, but they hadn't thought to disarm him before letting him into the room, and a .45 was a very persuasive argument for letting him stay. Now, as the nurse leaves, he shifts forward again in the dim not quite silence, reaching for Leo's hand and curling his own gently around it.

"You awake, old man?" he asks quietly.

Frowning, Leo sighs, blinking his eyes open and turns his head over towards the voice. "Nick." He squeezes the hand around his own and tries to smile. "How you doin'?" He coughs. "Shouldn't you be working?"

His grip tightens slightly at the sound of Leo's voice, and he has to bite back the sob that wants to escape. He'd almost given up hope of hearing that again, and he slips closer, free arm propped on the side of Leo's mattress, thumb stroking gently along the webbing between Leo's thumb and index finger as he meets bleary eyes in the dimness.

"I'm fine, old man." Lie. Christ, such a lie. He's not fine, and he doesn't think he ever will be again. "Don't have anything too urgent right now, figured I'd keep you company."

"You're a liar." There's no venom in his voice though, like he doesn't have the energy to fight with him. Instead, he squeezes Nick's fingers back the best he can and just lies there, breathing shallowly for a long minute. "I'm dying... aren't I? S'why you're staying, isn't it?"
