Better Late and Forever...
Clark was trying really hard not to mope, as Chloe accused him of doing, but he was...blue. “We've been dating for four months and planning this for almost two,” he said, despondent.
“Just because you couldn't kiss him on New Year's doesn't mean you can't kiss him the rest of the year. Lex knows you like him, doesn't he?”
“Yes,” Clark answered. “And I know he likes me, too,” he added before she could ask.
She smirked, apparently unfazed by him jumping ahead in the conversation. “And you have boyfriend plans with your boyfriend for Valentine's Day, right?” She sat down on the adjacent cushion of the sofa. “You aren't failing the Boyfriend Olympics by missing one opportunity to kiss him.”
“We're going to see 50 First Dates .” A darkened theater, a tub of shared popcorn...an extended curfew so they could see it in Metropolis. It was too new a movie to hope for privacy enough for stolen kisses in the theater, but they had the long drive home…
His smile must have gotten ridiculous because Chloe was laughing at him. “Trust me, you guys will be fine this year.” She stopped talking and Clark turned around in time to catch the flash of headlights. “Looks like our girl time is up. Go get him, tiger.”
“Thanks, Chloe,” he said. She gathered her stuff quickly and disappeared down the steps with her jacket over her arm. Her airy, “Ho, Lex, Happy New Year,” floated up, followed by the lower rumble of Lex’s greeting.
Then Lex was ascending the stairs and Clark was sure he was wearing the same smile Chloe had laughed at earlier. “Hi, Lex.”
“Hi, Clark,” Lex said in return, feet carrying him across the loft in such casual strides that Clark didn't realize he was in Lex’s trajectory until Lex pressed into his space and leaned up for a quick, chaste kiss. “Sorry I didn't make it on New Year's Eve.”
“You’re here now, that's what matters.” It's what Chloe had been trying to tell him, but it only made sense when Lex was standing in front of him with cheeks ruddy from the cold, lips slightly chill, but eyes so alight. “I love you.”
Lex's eyelashes dipped against his cheeks, but the smile on his lips spread wider. And if his eyes had seemed bright before, that was nothing to the fire in them when Lex opened them again. “Clark.”
There was nothing chaste to the kiss that followed.
