I like pulling my hair halfway up when I feel the need to do anything with it. I bought one of these at a craft fair a few months ago, and was shocked at how well it kept everything in place. Highly recommended.
Or you can take a thin section of hair near both temples, put a few twists in them, and use an elastic to tie the two together where you would a half-pony.
And hair sticks can be cute, though my friend with really thick hair said the wooden ones tended to snap, and she needed metal to get more than a few uses out of them.
French braiding your own hair is a bitch even without arthritis.
I have super thick, curly hair that tends to frizz as well, though it's not long right now. Garnier makes a "sleek and shine" line and the conditioning creme (leave in stuff that you use after you shower) is a lifesaver. There are probably also similar products from other lines but that one seems to work well and doesn't grease up my hair.
Wow your hair sounds like mine before I cut it. I would tie back the top half of my hair them braid it with the rest or a low side pony tail. Not much I could do with my super straight hair. As for products just used biosilk & Garnier mousee.
My hair has never been either terribly long or particularly thick, but my favorite frizz-fighting hair product is John Freida's Secret Weapon. Fantastic for puffy hair or frizzy ends.
I have also learned that my hair does better when I don't shampoo it every day -- I either just give it a good scalp rub and a rinsing, or use a bit of conditioner if I want it to smell nice. I shampoo it about every three days and my hair is much, much happier. I mention this because it is a trick I learned from someone with long, thick hair. :)
The topsy tail is a cool hair toy. you make a not quite tight pony and then using this little plastic wonder you pull the pony tail through and under. It looks cool and it shortens it up a bit. If you do several down the back of your head it actually _looks_ similar to a french braid but without all the fuss.
I like to part my hair down the middle and then run two series of tails down each side and use the topsy tail on them. Kinda renaissance-y but really easy.
It also keeps anyone spot from getting that ouchy feeling from the weight of your hair pulling on it.
