Sam and Dean have never actually heard either of the masturbation ones before, John's a man and he knows men have needs sometimes.
The thing with the face freezing was disproven early. Sam makes the WEIRDest faces in his sleep and none of them have ever froze on there.
The "ugly stick" one though... Dean asked Sam where it was once (Since he was obviously pummled with it) but Sam seemed to have been having a bad day and that whole thing just turned out... BAD.
