As explained earlier today: SNOWPOCALYPSE 2011 OMG. Well, I've still got internet and electricity, although my sister's already run into some road trouble. Let's have a breakdown of reports from around Twitter:

@BreakingNews: State of emergency declared in Alabama; up to 10" of snow predicted in some areas - Times-Journal http://bit.ly/i0YjcVThis ( Read more... )

this is going to end well, alabama is the center of the universe, twitter, snow!

I'm in GA, and OMG SNOW. SO MUCH SNOW. Haven't seen this much since the '93 Blizzard.

Same here. It's about four plus inches in Athens. Naturally, drunk college students are jumping into the pool. As you do.

Whoa wait, you're in Athens?

I'm at UGA too and we were having drunken snowball fights and attempted sledding on dining hall trays earlier this evening outside the dorms.

I'm the randomisjen above and I must second this: If they can't see a national championship, there will be civil unrest. You think I am kidding and I am really kind of not.

She really isn't kidding. There will be riots in the snow, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

My sister and her husband both graduated from Auburn. They named their firstborn child after Auburn. They will be LEADING the riots.

....Well, they WOULD be leading the riots, if they weren't out of state right now to go SEE the game.

Makes me glad the only games I'm interested in following are made by Nintendo.

just got off the phone with my parents in Huntsville--they've already had an inch of snow in the last hour.

WHY AM I NOT HOME FOR THIS.

Mom also just emailed to say it's thundering and lightninging while snowing.

RIDONK.

Ahh yes, thundersnow. Not uncommon in Ohio (where I am) because Ohio has EVERY kind of weather imagined by gods and men.

Its freaky when you first hear it, but as far as thunder goes, its the kind I prefer.

OMG I am IN a Cleolinda post.

*dies*

Also, in my defense-- we really do have snow and not ice here. This is me resisting the urge to yell "I CAN READ, TREBECK."

And I already got the requisite Team Jasper jokes in response. So you know. There's that.

I think we've moved from ice to snow, but it has a very frosty (as opposed to fluffy or slushy) quality.

It's like I don't even have to make the jokes anymore. You just set 'em up and... step back.

A hopefully helpful (or at least informative) fact regarding closing a city: I have friends who live in Columbus, OH. When they declare a snow emergency, the city is closed--it is ILLEGAL to be out on the road for any non-emergency reason.

I believe that's the case in GA as well. At least, the radio announcer said that's what our state of emergency situation meant.
