Short version: thank y'all so, so much for helping Emily (
foresthouse) out with her eye surgery. It means a lot to both of us. Altogether, she now has about three months' worth of payments, thanks to y'all. "Oh my God! I'm just over here waving my hands," she said to me last night--"well, waving one hand with the phone in the other. Oh my God!" She said that so much weight was already lifting off her shoulders, which was great when she went into surgery this morning.
Long version:
@cleolinda: So poor @foresthouse is checking in for surgery, and they're all like we will take all your moneys now plz
@cleolinda: and she's like THAT IS KIND OF THE OPPOSITE OF THE WAY YOU SAID IT WOULD HAPPEN WITH THE PAYMENTS AND ALL
@cleolinda: and they're like yeah sorry, lol
@cleolinda: So she talked them into letting her pay $1000 right now, which she wouldn't even have if not for you guys. So thank you so, so much.
@cleolinda: She has a month to come up with the other $3000. So much for this monthly payment business.
@cleolinda: And then she gets to do it all over again with the other eye. YAY.
@cleolinda: I am advising her now to get a monocle.
@cleolinda: @foresthouse is out of surgery--doctor says she looks good, but it feels like "a sunburn on the eye."
@cleolinda: She is groggy from Ativan and headed for "a mandatory 5-hour sleep," but in good spirits.
@cleolinda: She texted. While on Ativan and with only one good eye. You can imagine what it looks like.
@AnnLarimer: @cleolinda I bet she's faking. Poke it to see if it really hurts.
ETA: Wait, she's
voice posted. Ohhhhhh shit. I thought she was telling me she had a month to come up with $3000. She's saying she has until the end of THIS MONTH. Craaaaap.
So, under the circumstances,
doctoraicha decided to start up
a fandom auction (fanfic, crafts, icons, graphics) to help come up with the other $3000, which is... kind of amazing. (Everything will go straight to Emily's PayPal, so there's no danger of us blowing it all on sparkle and hookers.)
doctoraicha is the one who knows how these things usually work, so I'm keeping an eye on things but mostly following her lead. If there's anything you guys would be willing to offer or bid on, that would be really, really wonderful. I still have some Movies in Fifteen Minutes paperbacks, writing parodies. Book or TV recaps might be possible, but I also have to keep working on work that Emily can actually sell for me that will also bring us moneys. I don't know--suggest something?
And, I mean--I'll lay it all out in the table: it's hard to ask for help. Specifically, money. It feels awful and weird, you know? You're more than happy to help someone else, but you feel weird and queasy about being the one who needs it. And Emily is such a close friend of mine that I feel like I might as well be asking for myself. But--I just don't know what else to do, you know? I'm just glad at this point she didn't actually get a corneal transplant for them to repossess, at the rate things are going. So everyone being so immediately supportive means a lot to us. I don't know how I'll make it up to y'all, but I'll find a way.
As an unrelated update--both of my grandmothers aren't doing well at the moment, as previously mentioned, but my mother's mother is at doing better at home with her 24-hour sitters; I went to the hospital last night to see my father's mother in ICU, and she's in relatively good spirits.
I've just been too wrung out to deal with a lot of things this week, so I'm going to try to catch up on linkspam at some point, after I go to the zoo tomorrow with small children to visit the Pallas cat YAY, and there will be a two-part Secret Life this weekend, probably one part on Saturday and the other on Sunday. It's one coherent installment, really; it's just too much material for a single post, so I'm splitting it up. Not to get too NEXT WEEK, ON LOST about it, but ~THE SHELF WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.~
Also there is a podcast-related surprise but I cannot tell you about it because it is a surprise.
OH WAIT AND: BREAKING HOBBIT NEWS:
Martin Freeman confirmed for Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage for Thorin, which I did not see coming at all, but am very intrigued by. Read the article for other confirmed dwarves, and unconfirmed names that include David Tennant, Stephen Fry, Bill Nighy, James Nesbitt, and Saoirse Ronan.
