Comment cross-posting addendum

Sep 01, 2010 21:33

Okay, since I was having a hard time visualizing what the hell you would even want to use this for, the worst issues had to be explained to me. There were a couple of good comments explaining how cross-posting comments from LJ to Facebook or Twitter (even accidentally) could end badly ( Read more... )

livejournal, this is going to end well, bad ideas, for science!, twitter, facebook

There's a style...thingie... you can do with your LJ customizable style... thing... that will take away the boxen on your journal if people are viewing your journal in your style. Idiot proof (no, really, *I* could figure it out) instructions are here:

From calcitrix on the news thread, here:

Am I right that if you turn on your Facebook connect, that on your LJ user profile, under External Services, it will show a little FB logo and your entire full (RL) name as a link to your FB profile? (Saw this on someone else's user profile).
I've just looked at your profile, and yes, it does appear to give your Facebook name, "Cleolinda Jones", under External Services.

So. Not. Good. 0_o

WHO THINKS THIS IS OKAY? GODDAMN. It's like the people who come up with this stuff are robots and don't have anything they don't want other people to know.

It's all about privilege, innit? They don't have to worry about being stalked/accidentally outed/whatever, so OF COURSE it's not a concern.

Not to generalize, but I wonder if there are any women at all among the people who come up with these ideas.

Hope they're not NSFW or revealing of your personal interests that you didn't want your family to know about! GOD.

MEANWHILE BACK ON TWITTER OH SHIT particle_person September 2 2010, 04:02:24 UTC
Twitter just sent out an email about a couple of things. One is the new Oauth login business, and the other...well, I'll let you read it yourself:
In the coming weeks, we will be expanding the roll-out of our link wrapping service t.co, which wraps links in Tweets with a new, simplified link. Wrapped links are displayed in a way that is easier to read, with the actual domain and part of the URL showing, so that you know what you are clicking on. When you click on a wrapped link, your request will pass through the Twitter service to check if the destination site is known to contain malware, and we then will forward you on to the destination URL. All of that should happen in an instant.

You will start seeing these links on certain accounts that have opted-in to the service; we expect to roll this out to all users by the end of the year. When this happens, all links shared on Twitter.com or third-party apps will be wrapped with a t.co URL.What does this mean for me ( ... )

"We hope to use this data to provide better and more relevant content to you over time."

That line looks like one of the things they say on those parody accounts, like BP_Global_PR. I felt the omission of the xoxoxo.

Oh, ugh. Not cool. Now, from my browser, I can just c/p the link and open it in a new tag to bypass this, but on my phone, not really. (Well, I guess I can but it would be more difficult and take longer, and I might end up clicking on it by accident anyway.)

The thing is, we have zero guarantees on this. Not even that they'll only use the data in aggregate. Not even that they'll erase it after 9 months like Google. What if you're accused of a crime (not necessarily guilty, even) and the gov't subpoena's the logs?

Thanks for doing the work LiveJournal failed to do fengi September 2 2010, 04:22:50 UTC
Your post is an example of how LiveJournal should introduce major new features. Devote an entire post to a detailed introduction of the change with illustrated examples of all the salient points. This is what professional companies with expertise in customer retention do ( ... )
