Sleepy January

It's funny--there's something about January that gets me into a really dreamy mood. It happens automatically; about a week in (you know, like... right now) I look up and realize it's on me again. I think a lot of it comes from the pile of books I usually accrue from my birthday and Christmas--the latter half of December, bleeding over into January ( Read more... )

cuba, depression, narnia, writing, pirates (arrrr), friends, the lovely emily, leaving the house omg, black ribbon, travel, movies, books, shopping, school, vampires, werewolves

I feel the same way. My college did the five-week intersession thing, which was fantastic. I always get really creative in January (is it a Capricorn thing perhaps?) So I'm pretty bummed that I have to work in January now >_>

Either way, let's get some writing done ;)

I had a C.S Lewis/Charles Williams/Tolkien class in college and I'd put that one and my fantasy lit class as two of the most fun classes I ever took. Okay, so I really liked my YA lit class and film class too, so I guess the point is we had a cool English department, but the Lewis class was a blast.

So you'd have entire afternoons, sometimes entire days, with nothing but what you wanted to do.

Sounds wonderful! :)

But know what my first thought was? "Somewhere out there, Chinese and Indian teenagers are shaking their heads and saying this is why America is collapsing." I'm full of pessimism today, it seems. :P

Well, as opposed to the rest of the school year, where I was running around with my hair on fire, trying to write papers in three languages.

I never did understand your choice of major; why not creative writing from the git-go?

They didn't offer it as a major, was the problem. And at the time, I was genuinely interested in languages, and if I couldn't do creative writing, that was what I wanted to do. And I'm glad that I did it, because I wouldn't have had the time to take so many French and Spanish classes if I'd done a different major. In fact, I'm probably a better writer in English for having taken them. It's just that I never really wanted to be a professional translator; it's what I just told people as a means of buying time until I could be a Published Professional Novelist, Etc. You know, because you tell someone "I want to be a writer," and immediately they start in on you about how are you going t make any money doing that. So I'd just say I had a double major and wanted to be a translator, and everyone would back off. It's just that when it got to my senior year, I finally realized that I had bitten off more than I could chew.

Short answer: I would have been a CW major if they'd let me.
