I don't see anything on my calendar...

Okay, can someone in the Homewood area (nearish to Samford University) tell me what the hell was going on today? There was loud music all afternoon/evening a couple of streets over from me, and then at 10 pm, just now, there was ten minutes of giant, downtown Birmingham, Fourth of July-quality fireworks. Seriously, I watched them from my kitchen ( Read more... )

But I watched them, and they were spaced out like a planned fireworks program, complete with grand finale. And they ran from exactly 10:00 to 10:10.

So it didn't look anything like this? I'm out of guesses, then!

Ooooh. The gradeschool-aged pyro rocket enthusiast in me is delighted. Although I now feel rather guilty indeed about all the times I brought fireworks back from southeast asia in my luggage (back before 911, obvsly).

OMG, what happened? I was told in Driver's Ed that if you get hit by a cop, fire truck or ambulance it's YOUR fault because you didn't get out of their way fast enough.

LOL. You're mom's idea would never have crossed my mind. I suppose I should start considering that the sirens I often hear after lightning strikes may be ambulances for whoever the lighting hit, instead of the fire trucks for whatever it hit, like I usually assume.

I live in the desert where anyone not official using fireworks is illegal, so the thought that sirens wouldn't be going to arrest someone or put out a fire is amazing to me.

Those Kids I Hate are always setting off fireworks on minor holidays, but they're, like--you know, noisemaker type stuff, things you hear but that I've never actually seen. So I'm guessing those are legal? I really don't know anything about fireworks laws around here, except that I've never seen a show that big anywhere 1) not on July 4th and 2) so close to my house.

As a resident of Georgia, I can tell you that fireworks are legal in Alabama. For the longest time, we (Georgians) would be forced to traverse across our neighbors borders to purchase fireworks/noisemakers. Hence the GIANT fireworks stores off the interstate in Alabama and South Carolina (and Florida? and Tennessee? Yeah, probably, though I have no good reason to go to any of those states).

And TN, yes. I have traversed the TN/GA state line many times now, and there are huge warehouses to sell fireworks in TN.

AND YET IT IS ILLEGAL TO SET THEM OFF IN THE CITIES HERE. Go fig.
