Okay, so: my mother and stepfather went to the bank to deal with the random people in Georgia who wrote checks on their account. the thing is, at that point, they've already got what they wanted which is the merchandise that they can then sell. it's not about your money in your bank. it's about the swag. they're not going to be able to get any money from cleo's mom's account, but they've now got almost $1400 worth of junk stuff that they didn't have before. and if they write more checks on that account rather than trying to debit the money, they'll get more stuff.

I'm glad you put this because it was exactly the response I was going to post-

We discussed this greatly in my computer crimes and theft class- this is the most damaging form of theft to Retail outlets because in the long run, they are the sole responsible party, and for thousands more than the common shoplifter.
