Monday morning, overwhelmed by linkspam

Oh my God, I meant to post this last week and then... things happened: there's a new HP e-zine, Cauldrons and Chocolate Frogs, and I did an interview with them a few weeks ago. I haven't read over the posted interview, but a quick glance makes me think it's fairly close to the original IM transcript, so, you know, very little chance of anything I ( Read more... )

On the upside, at least the Cloverfield widget works. (I need to see if I can hunt down that purported concept art of the monster, in scale with the Statue of Liberty. Probably bogus, but interesting nonetheless.)

And could this be the new Bond girl? (Why herald her look as "modern" anymore? I thought we were past modern. Aren't we at post-modern yet? Unless that's code for "pretty eyes and nice hat.")

Oh, I posted the art at some point--probably right after the last trailer where we finally saw the monster. You can probably find it back there. And yeah, I saw the thing about the new Bond girl--thought I'd wait until one of the more skeptical movie blogs picked it up, to see if it's real.

Wait, what? You vet information and don't just post it willy-nilly? What kind of blogger are you?

I think at some point I was actually spoilerphobic re: Cloverfield, and I don't know when that changed, but the more I hear about the backstory the more intrigued I'm getting. I'm still love/hate with JJ Abrams (and of varying degrees of faith), but I have more faith when he's got the short short leash of a cinematic release.

Oh, if you want my must-read link of the day -- you didn't ask, but you do have an inquisitive soul -- it's MightyGodKing's chainsaw disassembly of the "nice guy's" lament.

Though I confess it's good to see you on a Monday morning. I hope this is a nascent spurt of creativity/productivity and not just insomnia run amok...? :/

Is it insomnia when you feel awake when you're supposed to? ; )

For some reason, I've been seeing a lot of (well-appreciated) evisceration of the Nice Guy lately, but I don't think I'd seen that one. Thanks!

I'm actually glad that Lost is moving to another night if it will be on earlier. I have to go to bed at 10:00pm, so the trend of showing it later and later on Wednesday wasn't working for me.

Also- could someone tell me what the overall "feel" of Sweeney Todd" is supposed to be? It looks interesting, and I know the basic story, but is it supposed to be a comedy or drama or what?

Gory, gory, tragic musical. Probably with some black humor thrown in there, but mostly tragic drama, from what I'm understanding.

I've heard it's kind of a romcom with slapstick, like The Three Stooges meets Harry, When Harry Met Sally, and Sally Got Mail In Seattle as a Prelude to a Kiss. (Harry meets Joe Versus the Volcano, but Joe loves the volcano more.)

Or maybe Cleo has it right.

Black comedy, with a tiny bit of sweeping romance thrown in.

So bad, but so enjoyable. My friends and I had fun doing dramatic readings of it.

I read those books to see what the fuss was about, and I'll tell you, one of those posters on the "sparkly boyfriend" link there hit it right on the head. They compare the first book to enjoyably self-indulgent fanfic. The OP actually said the kind of "bad fanfic" they loved to read. I don't think the books are bad, but they are self-indulgently romantic melodramatic in exactly the way of the stuff (including fanfic) that I enjoyed reading and writing as a teenager. So I can totally see the appeal to a large section of the book-buying demographic... self-indulgently romantically melodramatic teenage girls. Nothing wrong with that. I write for self-indulgently snarky girls (and guys), but there's a lot of crossover. Snarky and romantic are not mutually exclusive. My characters just tend to get sarcastic instead of angsty ( ... )

I really enjoyed your interview - you had some really interesting thoughts on writing and fandom and such! Thanks for posting it! X-files was my first fandom too, before I knew fandom existed. For me X-files was late high-school /early college and very much pre-internet. (For me anyway!)
