Friday night, feeling kind of meh

Feb 23, 2007 22:26

Hey, you know the people who got in touch with me about The Illusionist? The same company has emailed me about The Tudors... because they found "Troy in Fifteen Minutes." This made me laugh and laugh, because this means that they haven't even seen all the times y'all and I discussed Elizabeth or Tudor history or The Other Boleyn Girl or whatever. ( Read more... )

There's been talking about Elizabeth and I missed it? And what was the company contacting you about? Another book?

I can't remember if we actually discussed Elizabeth--probably not; probably just in passing, about icons maybe. And it's a marketing company--basically they've been getting in touch with bloggers about promoting various things in exchange for, like, a free copy of the DVD. Someone from the company already sent me The Illusionist, which was basically an excuse to babble on about a movie I loved anyway, and now someone else from the company seems to have found me, to promote The Tudors, which I was totally going to watch anyway. I'll pretty much promote anything I already liked or was already planning to watch, really, as long as they don't have a problem with me telling people up front, "Hey, this company got in touch with me, and..."

First of all: First comment dance!

Secondly, can you talk to the company about setting up something that you could pass on to your readers? Not like a movie or something, but an exclusive clip or something? That way you could maybe increase your readership or whatever, and they can promote for free!

They've definitely got a YouTube trailer I can embed; I may or may not get to watch the first episode early, I'm not sure. I've just replied to the first email and I'm waiting to hear back and discuss some ideas--since this is an ongoing series, fairly high-profile, rather than a single DVD release for a relatively quiet movie, I'm thinking creativity might be more welcome here.

My historical costume list is alternating between "well, maybe it'll get people interested in costuming and then we can teach them to do it right" and "OMGNOEAAAAAAHHHHHHH!MAKE IT STOOOOOPPP"

The production company actually has some poor woman hitting the Tudor tailor e-mail list asking about how Henrican garments are like modern and stylish. So far it's been pretty teeth-grittingly polits.

I'm looking at the stills they linked me to, and... sweet fancy Moses, it's all so wrong. I mean, just for starters, even the dresses that look somewhat accurate have the close-fitting Elizabethan sleeve rather than the full Tudor bell sleeve. It's just... wow, it's all so incredibly wrong, particularly if you're used to something like Rome on HBO. But I'm not really surprised, given that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is pretty much the physical opposite of Henry VIII.

That, and click on the banner. The splash page shows JRM with his sleeves rolled halfway up to his shoulders. I think that's your basic signal that this isn't even trying to be accurate. If it's more of a trashy soap in "historical" costume, I can get on board with that.

Not to mention the off-the-shoulder gowns, the tits-on-a-plate bodices, the asymmetrical pop-art brocades....

*flails*

Have you seen the Other Boleyn Girl costumes? Apparently a period fabric that's similar has turned up, but the costumes still look kind of cheap and over-modern in the stills.

On the other hand, according to the guy who was watching the porn,

1) the porn did not involve rape or even any sound (screaming) that would be considered out of the ordinary, and
2) he watched the porn in the middle of the night and the neighbor didn't bust in until mid-morning.

In fact, the more I see about this case, the more convinced I am that the sword-wielding guy is in fact just crazy.

I'm going to be down in Austin a lot in the next few months... might have to see what I can find out about SC2: Electric Boogaloo while I'm down there.

I'm not counting on much, admittedly... the high point of my Austin movie-gawking is finding the Top Notch burgers from Dazed and Confused. Pretty good burgers, too.

Hugh Grant to be Dr Who baddie.

Please let it not be the Master, please let it not be the Master...

He added: "I'm in talks about a one-off role. I'd prefer to be a baddie, they're more fun!"

Phew. Not that I don't like the idea of Hugh as a villain (heck, I prefer it when he plays roles like that. He was great in Bridget Jones' Diary, so it would be great to see him play someone totally evil) but because I'm reeeeally hoping that the rumors of John Simm in talks about playing the Master turn out to be true. :D

I'm with you on the Britney thing. At first I was in the "wheee, let's all watch the train wreck" party, now...well, I just feel sorry for her now.

I figured someone might have linked you to this by now, but I guess not. It's a monologue by Craig Ferguson of the Late Late Show about the whole Britney thing as well as his own sobriety and it's pretty touching and heartfelt, I thought.

They announced who's playing the Master- I just have to search back and see if I can find it. I hate that I have to wait until at least October to see the 3rd series- I got the first two in the mail from Amazon/Borders on Tuesday, only $130. I was very ~squee~ to see ANY Doctor Who news, and other fans.
