Katrina links

I have had a few complaints indirect requests for lj-cuts, and since we're beyond the first few crucial days where I could argue that you could suck it up because this was important, I will comply. At this point, you're either interested or you're not.

My mom was telling a story at dinner that's a bit more upbeat.

She works for a bank here in town (New Braunfels, TX) and she said they have a refugee family with accounts there now. Apparently they got out of NOLA the day before the storm hit, and it's a family of twenty-five- cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, several kids, the works ( ... )

Just two quick ones. NPR's evening news program, All Things Considered, did two audio timelines of Katrina and the events before and after:

Katrina Timeline: Unexecuted Plans
Katrina Timeline: Misdirected Aid

Those were fabulous but I didn't get to hear them all. Thanks for providing those links.

No problem! I was going to watch something else and ended up just listening to NPR and not doing anything else for a half hour.

This has NO RELATION to my priorities, really, but I am strangely and deeply comforted by the story about Snowball the dog possibly having been found.

That was the story that managed to make me burst into tears at work a couple days ago, because I was stupid enough to read the news article about animals affected by Katrina on the computer at the front of the store.

I know what you mean...I can't read any articles about animals or babies without tearing up or outright crying. Damned pregnancy hormones!

The best part about reading the latest on lil Snowball was that my kitty jumped into my lap as I clicked the link. Coincidence?? Nahhh...

Among the many links I followed was the one about lil Snowball. All I have to say is that I <3 <3 <3 Cindy Meyers right now.

From the article::
"It’s important that animals are taken care of in evacuations, Meyers said, adding that it’s “inexcusable” that pets are being separated from their owners.

"Pets are family members and they need to be cared for just as the people do," she said."

She took the words right out of my mouth.

As a Californian, can I just say how proud I am at this moment? My governor is fighting for the rights of all our citizens and making sure that equal opportunity isn't just a catch phrase and... wait. Sorry. My mistake.

At this point Gary Coleman or the stripper would have been a better choice. Gah.

At least he won't ever make it to the White House.

Oh, believe me, people are trying their hardest to get him there, however many laws parts of the Constitution they have to change. Sometimes I hate living here.

I know. Sigh.

But, at some point they'll figure out that making those changes would let other immigrants hold office. And they couldn't have that, now could they? Gah.
