I'll quote a comment I made over at writer_girls, because I'm too lazy to think of a different way to say it ( Read more... )

Awwww that's awful having to be out in the cold so long for school. ESpecially when it wasn't even on! I've done that before.....makes you so paranoid when no else turns up.

But hot chocolate always solves all woes. ;)

The Missed Opportunity Award: Cleo begged and pleaded, but the producers could not be persuaded to name the movie "Jeepers Creepers 2: Creep Harder"
That? Should not have made me laugh for the twenty minutes it did. Though it was fun to amuse myself with it in statistics class.

True - static can kill your pc, so you have to be extra careful. But it's not that difficult. First up: the basics. Make sure you've backed up all your files. You already know this. Now for the fun part.

When I open up a box I make sure I'm in a non-carpeted room. Remove socks and all non-essential clothing (remember Lain when she was upgrading her Navi?). When I mess with hardware I usually wear soft cotton pants and a t-shirt. Less clothing less static? Maybe, but it's better to err on the side of caution.

Grounded?

The most important thing is to turn off the power but keep the machine plugged in. When you open the box, ground yourself by touching the metal part of the case. Unplug the machine and proceed with changing the processor. Useful how-tos can be found at THG. Make sure you have thermal paste. (Or consult your local friendly pc guy.)

Hope this helps (:

Wow, thanks--that's really helpful. I did bust open the case today (and kept touching the metal obsessively--touch touch touch), but realized I had no idea where to put anything. I don't think I have a slot open for my memory upgrade (and I have added one before, so I know what/where it is), which suuuuuucks. And the hard drive upgrade didn't even come with instructions, so I'm going to call a friend of a friend who's a tech guy tomorrow. Touch touch touch.

With the RAM - how many slots are there? Take out a weaker stick and, wait.

Q: Does it matter which slots I plug my new module in?
A: In general, you will get the best performance if you put the largest module (in megabytes) in the lowest-numbered slot. For example, if your computer comes with 32MB of removable memory and you want to add 128MB, it would be best to put the 128MB module into slot 0 and the 32MB module into slot 1.

Slot 0? In newer pcs it shows which slot is which. In older models it doesn't. On the motherboard on this page, it's the topmost of the four.

After a RAM up, a harddrive up is the second easiest thing :) Try this page. You can also google for sites pertaining to hadware upgrades, &c. CL forums can also be of some use, but keep an eye out for punters.

It sounds like you're doing fine. Keep yourself grounded (heh), good luck and have fun with the rest of your upgrades (:

(Next up - you need to stop using IE. Ask me.)
