I don't have anything insightful to add to the discussion, but this is amazing. I love these recaps! I really enjoy clicking through to all the tweets and tumblr posts and background.
Cleo, you ARE going to write a Hannibal analysis book, right? I demand a book. I don't care if it's Leslie Klinger's Holmes sized, you are already doing such an amazing job at breaking this show down and putting things together in ways that are so rewarding.
Also, to respond to some other stuff in the comments, my first reaction to Lithuania is that it sounds very close to Romania, which means Dracula. I don't think the whole "Hannibal Lecter as modern vampire" thing is something that either this show or you are just making up out of nowhere.
Hmm. I interpreted Hannibal's comment about Misha influencing him to betray himself as meaning: Hannibal should have always been in control and free to act as Satan, but loving that little girl in a way he "couldn't help" kept him tame, bound, and vulnerable. He hated that vulnerability, and as soon as her death allowed him to, Hannibal got control over Misha by eating her, and things were right with himself, if not the world. This would also explain why any of his attempts at friendships are so controlling-Hannibal is trying to find a way to do it right this time, to connect with someone without losing control and being influenced away from the controlling murder wizard he is.
Basically, you're an amazing human beingshereadstoomuchOctober 5 2015, 04:20:27 UTC
I've never commented before because 1.) I only discovered your recaps a few weeks ago and 2.) your analysis has been so thorough and fascinating I've been too intimidated to respond, but I just thought I might as well let you know how much I appreciate everything you've done here. This show really means a lot to me, and to see it treated as the work of art it is is incredibly satisfying. The writing department at my college is constantly dismissing fantasy and other genre work as "pulp" and I'm more than a little tempted to print out your recaps and just wallpaper the writing head's office with this fantastic in depth analysis. Also, holy shit about the names. Thomas Harris would be so happy someone finally connected those dots.
