Hannibal 1x11: "Rôti"

Jun 09, 2013 11:30

Y'all know I adore this show, right? You know I love shaking my fist and throwing things at the villainous villainy that is the reason we are all actually here? I just want to be clear about that before I start yelling my head off.

Disturbing content, Eddie Izzard, Gillian Anderson, RAGE )

hannibal, tv, om nom nom, well that happened, recaps

I wonder if at some level it just comes down to wanting to know what he looks like in a mirror--how would someone with "pure empathy" see him? (He didn't like it when Bedelia saw him as wearing a person suit.) He wants to be seen because he's an ~artist~ but ironically his best "work" is what no one can ever see. And he wants someone to appreciate him (honestly, I think Will's fate was sealed when he started talking about the copycat "elevating murder to art"). And who better to appreciate him than someone like Will, if he can just drag him in deep enough?

Which makes me wonder what about Tobias, exactly, wasn't good enough for him. Unless Tobias was just too much like him, with no opposite nature to offer. Maybe what he really wants isn't a murder partner, but an audience. And Will wouldn't just view a murder--he would experience it, possibly from both sides.

Maybe... maybe he wants to teach Will to drink pain instead of running from it? Oh, God, I need another glass of wine.

This is one of those "Well that's a thing I just typed" posts, but I did think during "Fromage" that Tobias' "courtship" of Hannibal lacked... style. Throat Cello was by far the most beautifully horrific crime scene so far, granted, but the things he did that weren't murder showmanship weren't up to that level. Passing "coded" messages through Franklyn was something out of junior high or a Taylor Swift song, and when he casually said that he'd kill anyone who came to investigate him I snorted a little and went, "That's not interesting at all." So I can totally see why Tobias wasn't elegant enough for Hannbal's murder club.

Do you want to come murder with me after school, y/n/maybe?

Heh. Well, that, and Lecter probably being like, "You have got to pace yourself for the long run. I did not spend all these years Chesapeake Ripping for you to blow it on the first police visit you get. Amateur."

That said, it cracks me the hell up that Gideon is now the second serial killer who's tried to "court" Lecter. Meanwhile, he only wants the troubled, standoffish guy who turned down his dinner party invitation. BOYS.

Oh God, his life IS a Taylor Swift song. Just with more murder.

I'd say Tobias was a craftsman, but not an artist. He might make top-notch people instruments, but there's no subtlety or artistry to, "If they track me down, I'll kill them and go on the lam!"

Also--and I'm not sure if this is the way the show uses romance metaphors (date with the Ripper, chocolate and roses [both people], etc.) or fandom's naughty fingers in my brain--it seemed to me as if Lecter didn't like hearing "It's our song."

Maybe... maybe he wants to teach Will to drink pain instead of running from it?

I think I like this theory best of all.

Oh, he absolutely did not like that. In fact, he looked sort of hurt--I think what I said at the time was that he looked like, "But... we don't have a song. :(" I think it's significant that that's exactly the moment he was like, welp, time to tell Will where to go hunt that guy down.
