I've been reminded that I should tell people about when I'm going to be back in Michigan.

December 22nd - January 1st

I'm scheduled the 23rd, though ;-) That was the point of my disappointed reply. And I work 10-12 hour days.

...as much as I love the idea of Saturday off, though...maybe I can switch somebody for the 23rd or 26th. *crosses fingers*

I completely understand this is a long shot, but you asked, so...

I'm not sure what part of Michigan you will be in, but if you are going to be anywhere near Lansing on New Year's, you should come to the contra dance. It will be a blast, and if you've never contra danced, it's nothing like you've ever done before. I can guarantee that it will meet your criteria, though (i.e. something fun to do with people).
