Last night I went to the
Regina Spektor concert with
septicidal. It was good to hang out with her for a night. Though I'm going to mostly talk about the concert itself. It is 1:30am...
First, this has to be said:
I never felt so old and straight in my life.
As we approached the entrance of Avalon there was a line of under 21 kids. Almost all female, and the few guys who are prime candidates for our Performing Arts department. There were a few other males in the audience around my age, but it was very apparent that I was the only 21+ male that was not dragged their by a girlfriend. I am truly the margin of error in the target audience for Regina.
With that out of my system, I can carry on with the actual event.
It first started with seeing Regina outside of the venue. As we were waiting, a woman with a black hoodie and a few other people walked out. It was Regina and entrouge. I didn't want to make a big scene, but I smile and nodded as she walked by. She gave me a glance and a smile and continued walking to a black van with New Jersey places. Then she was driven off down Lansdome St and turned right.
The talent had just left the venue.
We didn't' get in until 7pm (when the show was to start). An hour later, an opening act (which was not advertised) came on. She went though two good original songs, introduced herself as Regina, then did another song. Someone in the audience yelled 'What's your name?!' after that.
Jenny Owen Youngs. The confidence level was low, but played to rock comedy. A very risky choice, but successful. I wouldn't buy her album, but I would go a little out of my way to see her live.
It wasn't for another hour that Regina finally took to the stage. At that point the audience melted away for me and I got to see the the beautiful musician perform. Aside from the rock act next door peering into the venue and the Yamaha synth piano, I enjoyed the set a lot. The thing about Regina is that the smaller and quaint the venue, the better the performance. This is propley the largest venue she can play to have that effect. Not a bad thing, just something to note. But I would like to see her in a smaller venue, but I doubt that will ever happen.
Here's some photos a fan took of the show. Had I knew photos were OK, I'd take mine. :(
