Someone that doesn't have corporate backing for the creation of a game. Which they make out of pocket or with help from a few others and then market it.

A person creating a game with little/no financing or backing by a software company. This person will most likely release their game for free or for a very small fee. I don't really know how they could shop their creation to companies, as an independent filmmaker would hunt for a distributor.
