Muahahaha, as you wish~ demon_andbutler July 14 2010, 08:41:39 UTC
Jane was, perhaps, lucky in one regard; Sebastian's demon mark was on his left hand, but it was proper to shake with his right, and so Jane would be spared the sight. When Jane offered his hand, Sebastian -- in what might have seemed like a gross violation of every prim and proper mannerism he possessed -- put his fingers in his mouth, one after the other. He caught the top of each gloved finger between his teeth and tugged lightly, pulling them until the glove was loosened enough to remove. The hand revealed beneath was slender and effeminate, the fingers long and smooth like ivory, but fingernails black as tar ( ... )

Sebastian raised an eyebrow at the needle pointing to V. "Miss Van Pelt seems to be your true North, sir. According to Red John." Sebastian knew little about Van Pelt other than she that was a colleague of Jane's, so he would not comment on any philosophical implications.

Just a mother. Of course. And Jack the Ripper's victims were just prostitutes. And Noah's Ark Circus had only been kidnapping children. Sebastian smirked at Jane's flippant remark. "You have hardened your heart to Red John's acts, haven't you? That is impressive, to say the least."

He turned the compass over in his hands, searching the object for any other significant features. He was not concerned with the symbolism so much as the technical details -- if this compass was made, someone had to have gathered the materials and learned to make it... or paid someone else to. But that wasn't an idea he would voice without prompting. Jane was calling the shots and Sebastian would never interfere with that.

Jane's voice was flat. "He's been spending too much time around Kristina Frye." The reference might go over Sebastian's head, but the derision would be clear enough, even if he wasn't familiar with the self-proclaimed psychic Van Pelt was so fond of. Jane didn't like that one of the team was in Red John's cross hairs (or at least so closely scrutinized), but he figured it was an inescapable eventuality ( ... )

No recognition showed on Sebastian's face when Jane said the name Kristina Frye, but the clear scorn in Jane's voice did not escape him. "This Miss Frye has not garnered your respect, I assume?"

Was it compulsion, or was Red John just doing this for fun? Sebastian's comprehension of the human psyche was a good 120 years behind. Either way, he didn't comment, he simply accepted Jane's explanation and moved on.

Might be? Local? Too broad. "I might be able to do many things, Jane," he said, sounding disinterested. He turned the compass over again, so that the letters and needle showed face up. Jane would need to learn to give direct orders if he wanted Sebastian to act with any effectiveness.

Jane just snorted. Sebastian knew his take on 'psychics' and Jane didn't want to put himself in an even worse mood than he already was.

"There are two places off the top of my head that I can guess would make something like that." He rattled off the addresses of the businesses, and started to walk out of the room, having already catalogued any necessary information when first finding the crime scene. CBI would be on the other stuff.

"Start looking there. If they give you a hard time, press them." He was confident that either the compass was made there, or it was workmanship that the jewelers would recognize.

it's cool. I should probably PM you so we can figure out what Sebastian finds. demon_andbutler July 26 2010, 01:31:37 UTC
Sebastian listened carefully to the addresses, then followed Jane out of the room. Silent, he remained behind his master like a shadow.

His lips slunk into a smile when he received that last order. Finally. Permission to play. "As you wish."

Jane had no qualms about using questionable methods at this stage in the game. Sebastian himself was evidence of that. If he be truly a demon, let him scare the pants off of someone; if it got Jane closer to his quarry, well the ends justify the means.

"Do you have a cell phone where we can stay in contact? I don't know if you want to do that whole," he waved his hand to indicate teleportation or something like it, "thing if I'm in the office. Too many questions."

Jane hadn't specified what "press them" meant, perhaps to his detriment. Sebastian would do as ordered, and press them as far as they would go before breaking. Severe mauling and perhaps death lay in wait for them, unless they were smart.

He halted in the foyer of the victim's house and cocked his head slightly at Jane's question. In his time, only the Italian mobsters had employed those odd devices known as cell phones. Here it seemed everyone had them, and although he'd seen them in use, he wasn't skilled in operating one himself.

"I do not. If you wish me to have a cell phone, I can obtain one." Their mechanics escaped him, so Jane might have a stolen, unactivated cell on his hands soon, if he agreed to that option instead of giving Sebastian one himself. "In the mean time, perhaps we should choose a meeting place outside your office."

Jane knew full well what he was implying by giving a vague license to gather information. Gotta break eggs to make an omelette after all. Sure, it was even more cavalier than he'd normally be, but Jane despised using violence, and if someone else did it his conscience would be clear enough. If someone got hurt while helping him catch Red John, well, they'd recover eventually. Or go insane. Either way.

Unless they were aiding Red John purposefully, in which case Jane hoped for a very brutal death.

"There's a small diner a few miles from the office. No one ever goes there; I've used it to clear my head before." Jane drew out his keys and led the way back to his car before getting in again. "My cell is 916-555-5309. Call me collect from a pay phone if you like, I don't care about the charges."

Sebastian followed Jane to the car but did not get in. Instead, he stood outside the window and listened to his master's words. There were words in Jane's instructions he didn't quite understand; "diner" sounded more like a place than a person, and was it that now there were public phones one could pay to use when not at home? Humans and their technology. Very interesting.

His limited grasp of technology was nothing his master should be troubled with. Sebastian placed a hand over his heart and bowed to Jane.

"Yes, my lord."

In the space of a blink he had vanished, as if he had dissolved into the blowing wind.
