I don't know what is special about the self-serve yogurt. So you'll have to get back to me on that. But there is a frozen yogurt place in San Carlos which is the best. It's called Harmony.

The one in Palo Alto called Fraiche is pretty good. They make up for it by serving drip-style coffee (brewed by the cup) with beans from Blue Bottle Coffee.

self-serve is the awesomeness because you can control the ratio of frozen yogurt to toppings, AND you don't have to pay a set price (like $1) per topping. i like variety so if i want say 3-4 toppings, i don't want to pay to pay $3-4 more in addition to the price of just the yogurt. also you can mix different flavors of yogurt in one cup (of course this may not be such a good idea if you put too many flavors together lol). anyway it's mainly the idea of customization and having control over exactly how your cup of froyo turns out that is most appealing about self-serve. :)

their are also 3 places in berkeley. all within blocks of each other. papamingos, michelles yogurts and sweets, and rynos. one opened on shattuck avenue but i forgot the name. i have yet to try rynos and the one on shattuck.

i like papamingo's the best because the yogurt is much more tart and firm than michelles yogurt and sweets,

are any of them self serve though? that's what's so special about these two places i posted. however, i have been meaning to check out papamingo's. :)
