It was Danny's fault, really. He'd told Patrick so many times that there were monsters under his bed, or that the little people would come in the night and take him away.
Danny was a horrible, horrible brother sometimes. But Patrick loved him anyway. He was big and strong and fun and everything Patrick wanted to be.
So many nights Patrick lay awake because his brother had played some silly monsters joke on him. This was a joke too, it had to be. Danny would come and get him.
But until then, in this frightening new world, Patrick wouldn't sleep.
