It wasn’t quite the most disgusting thing James Lester had ever seen, because he’d had to work with Connor for a year or so by then.

It was, however, the most disgusting thing that had ever been put in front of him at an expensive restaurant.

“It’s a delicacy,” Christine assured him. “Quite delicious.”

The century egg, arranged in greenish-grey slices around an unfortunate salad, looked as if it should have gone in the recycling bin years ago.

“Do you think they’d let me have an omelette instead?” Lester muttered.

“Oh James,” Christine sighed disapprovingly. “Those are for poor people.”
