I watched this the other day, and wish I had the time to write loads of comments (but I seriously need sleep), but yes, agreed, it felt like a very solid story. It was a bit repetitive, such as with the launch footage, but was kind of a thrill for me.

Oh, here's one more comment: the Second Doctor got to use a canoe! I'm surprised that the Third never did; how'd he miss that opportunity? *grin*

I think if Three were going to use a canoe, he'd want a speedboat engine attached. Which reminds me, we DO actually get to see him in a speedboat (or was it jet ski?) chase with the Master at the end of The Sea Devils.

So, my lovely Brit followers, I have to ask: do you folks all pronounce the letter Z as "zed?" Or that just a regional thing?

We all do it (Australia does too, I think, and possibly Canada, (and France), so I think it's just America that says "zee").

Pat, your whispering voice could very easily be used for seduction purposes. Please use this power for good and not for evil.

... you don't know the circumstances surrounding his death, do you?

Does this mean that, when he died of a heart attack at a convention in 1987, he was in bed with someone he shouldn't have been? All I ever knew back then was what I stated, and I never sought out more details...

According to a friend who heard it from Rob Shearman, there was a female fan present.

Oh, the indignity of it all...

I probably shouldn't joke that it's a good thing that I didn't attempt to jump Sylvester McCoy at a 1990 convention, though I was certainly tempted... *snort*

Huh. So Moff didn't just randomly add the TARDIS's invisibility feature for season 6. It's been there since...well...the original season 6.
And for that reason I squeed loudly when the TARDIS turned invisible recently. Almost as much as the Doctor getting mail later on.

Ahhhh. It wasn't about availability, it was about the reduced importance of the character compared to the Yeti stories. That makes sense.
it also had to do with that disagreement the powers that be had with Henry Lincoln and Mervyn Haisman that someone else mentioned in a comment to your review of The Dominators. Lincoln and Haisman held the rights to those characters, so after they slammed the door the producer had do find an alternative.

"Look, Jamie, sandwiches." I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO WATCH THIS SCENE PROPERLY AND CERTAIN PEOPLE KNOW WHY.
TWO AND JAMIE ARE SANDWICH LOVE.

This episode is certainly letting a lot of panty shots slide through, isn't it?
Much to the joy of Frazer and Nick in the audio commentaries.

Actually, you know ( ... )

Yeah, when I saw the invisibility thing in New Who I was like "...what."

You would enjoy this. (It's the co-written fic I mentioned right after the sandwiches.)

I never imagined Nick being much of a skirt-chaser, but I think the Making Of for this story changed that.

The smile wasn't quite enough for me because it underlined the fact that he was being boastful. Still, he's a very good boy the rest of the time.

Ohhhhhhh yes, those pictures.

I WANT TO HEAR THIS POEM. WHY CAN'T IT BE AN EASTER EGG ON THE DVD.

You were completely right about Vaughn. I thought he was an excellent villain. My one beef with him, though, is that we never find out the origin of his cybernetic body. Did he have some sort of terminal illness and the Cybermen agreed to fix his body in exchange for his help? Was he a pre-constructed tool of the Cybermen all along like Professor Bracewell in Victory of the Daleks? Also, I can't help but wonder how much more effective that scene with him getting shot by Watkins would've been if we hadn't already heard him say ( ... )

Something interesting about Vaughn was the way that his injured eye seemed to open fully just fine when he was angry. It kind of startled me, because I was accustomed to the half-open eye, and suddenly he's yelling while glaring out of two open eyes.

It was intended to be symbolic of the Doctor opening his eyes to the Cybermen's deceit.

Ahh, I've actually seen this recon! ext_689652 July 8 2011, 14:49:27 UTC
"What is it?"
"Surely you've seen them about? They're disposable transistor radios."
JAMIE'S IPOD!

I still don't have one....

(Which reminds me, FRAZER. ONLY A WEEK AND A HALF UNTIL I FINALLY GET TO MEET YOU IN PERSON.)

I've probably mentioned this before, but at Gallifrey 2010 he was in the lobby at night with all the fangirls around him, holding court like Hugh freakin Hefner!

Oh my god. Doctor Who predicted Apple.

So does that make Vaughn Steve Jobs? *ducks*

TROUGHTON + HINES = KILROY

They were behind the scenes of the Styx Mister Roboto video?

Ack. Never mind what I said about Vaughn a few minutes ago. He's pretty legit angry now.

"PACKER! PACKER? PACKER!! PACKER!! PAAAACKERRRRR!!!!"

Benton! So *you* were the unwitting transport in "those crazy kids'" shenanigans.

He shoulda been driving the Mystery Machine. The TARDIS is much better, of course.

Also, Brig.

(A little formatting tip: doesn't work for italics in HTML. For that you need < i > < / i >, sans the spaces.)

Frazer bringing all the girls to the yard doesn't surprise me. Deborah Watling described him as "having a girl on his arm" nearly every week when they were filming together.

Yes, Vaughn is basically Steve Jobs. An evil, megalomaniacal, cyborg Steve Jobs.

That's odd. It's Zoe's name always supposed to have those two dots above the "e"? (I know there's a name for that, but I can't remember it.)

Diaeresis. It's there to show that you pronounce the "e" separately. I think Zoë, being a pedantic sort of person, would insist on using it.

Wow, computers are pissing EVERYONE off in this story, aren't they?

And given my own experiences with voice-recognition software answering telephones, I think it's one of the show's most accurate predictions.

Wow. They skipped the whole rescue of Professor Watkins to cut right to one of Vaughn's lackeys giving him the bad news? Odd.

It's very like a Greek tragedy, where the messenger runs in to give news of the off-screen massacre they couldn't do on stage. In this case, it was scripted, but they ran out of time to film it. I have wondered if, had that episode been lost, the animators should have interpolated a version of that scene, since it wouldn't need dialogue.

I know I'd mentioned the eyebrow earlier, but he's got one full eye closed in this ( ... )

The last voice-recognition software I used was Rosetta Stone and it was actually fairly cooperative. I really need to get back to using that...

Greek tragedy...that's a very fascinating way of putting it. Although I don't think the animators would've been able to put that scene in because there was no original soundtrack for it.

Since there's no need for dialogue, Watkins' rescue could have been done with just stock sound effects and music. Though given how certain segments of the fandom have reacted to any changes, deliberate or accidental, made by the animators in what they did do, I suspect a whole interpolated scene might have caused some kind of explosion.
