Once again, Dodo seems to be showing more insight into the situation than Steven, or at least more skepticism.
And yet Steven calls her stupid, which never felt right for me. Although exasperated by her, Steven is very fond of Dodo, to the point that, of all the female companions he's travelled with, she's the one I tend to ship him with.

So before we had DoctorDonna, we had...this.
Indeed. And I think the actor did a great job as DoctorJano, with all of Hartnell's mannerisms (at least the voice, since it's all that was saved) perfectly reproduced.

That must be what Nentari meant by "the most heartbreaking piece of surviving footage ever." Awwwww ;___;Indeed it was. :( Dodo crying and Steven's face as he looks back kill me. I think Dodo's departure would have been much more satisfying if she had decided to stay with him, rather than what we got in the next serial - but sadly Jackie Lane still had two more episodes in her contract and the powers that be decided to fulfill that minuciously ( ... )

I can understand and support Steven/Dodo, especially considering her reaction to him leaving. It seems to have a much greater impact on a companion departure when you get to see the reactions of other companions (Dodo here, Nyssa and Tegan when Adric dies, Tegan when Nyssa leaves, etc. Vicki when Ian and Barbara left was a bit different because she was happy for them that they got home safely).

Oh man...so many props to DoctorJano. That was amazing work.

I'd read somewhere that there had been plans for a sequel story when the Doctor goes back and finds that Steven has become a tyrant, but it didn't happen for some reason or another.

As tamlover mentions below, Dodo's age is usually the reason why some people don't like the thought of shipping her and Steven, while the very popular theory that she's his descendant (as it can be implied that he slept with Anne Chaplet in The Massacre and got her pregnant) also squicks some people. However, if you put those two aside there's a lot going on for Steven/Dodo, particularly, as you say, her reaction to his departure. Click here if you want to see the tracklist for a Steven/Dodo mix I made last year; the link to the mix is long gone (though I have no trouble re-uploading any of my mixes if people ask for them) but you can see from these little paragraphs I wrote in between lyrics quotes my interpretation of that pairing.

I like to keep my mental image of a future Doctor playing matchmaker and getting the two of them together again ( ... )

It's been a while since I watched The Massacre, so I don't remember there being any implication of sexual activity between Steven and Anne...

I loved DoctorJano, too. I've never watched the recon - just have the audio - but he is fantastic. The Doctorisms just shout out in you in the best way. Great.

I was sorry to see Steven go, too. I like him, and if there was more surviving footage of him, I think he might be in the contending for my favorite. I love how he cares about people. You know, he doesn't really come off a soldier type, at least, not a hardened one.

I don't really mind him insulting Dodo - she insulted him, too. They pick at each other a bit, but are really really fond of each other, to me. I can't say I ship them - her age (generally presumed at about 16, as far as I've seen) makes that a no-go for me. So, much as I love Steven, I don't ship him at all.

That must be fun with audio-only.

It only just occurred to me that male companions seem to gradually decline in age over the course of the first several seasons (Harry basically resets it by being older than Jamie). Actually, Steven's age is never really stated, is it?

You're right about male companions getting young. I never really thought of it in those terms. I think part of it is the growth of the Doctor being the undisputed leader of the group, whereas earlier, Barbara or Ian would override him or whatnot.

Also, I know they originally planned for Barbara, at least, to be in her early twenties (I'd guess Ian was supposed to be younger, too, but am not sure). Some of the novelizations will refer to them as in their twenties, and then I have to shake my head. They just can't pass for twenties to me - both at least 35 when they leave, IMO. I tend to settle character ages in the vicinity of actor ages if I don't have anything to the contrary, and I don't get a "younger" vibe from them, like I do from Ben and Polly (whom I put at 23 or 24, a little younger than the actors, I think).

Peter Purves was about 26 when cast (looked up his year of birth) and I'd always put Steven at 25-27, so that was a pleasant surprise.
