Aww, Adric does a little Jamie-channeling to match Five's Troughton-channeling. This reminds me of Six calling Peri "Jamie" in The Twin Dilemma, only she was not as willing to help with the channeling as Adric here. (And since we're speaking of Doctors channeling their past selves, Colin Baker makes a great Pertwee impression in Trial of a Time Lord.)
Doctor, do you EVER have a regeneration that goes properly? (You probably do, but I'm not thinking of specifics right now.) The first one, definitely. Two freaks out a little when he hears the drums (yes, the Doctor heard drums before the Master!) and he acts a bit strange when Ben confronts him about his identity, but it's probably his quickest and smoothest recovery. After discussing the subject with a friend, I came with the theory that the Time Lords messed up with the Doctor's ability to regenerate when they forced him to change in The War Games.
Sounds like Five was as big a fan of reversing the polarities of neutron flows as Three was.Or maybe he's still channeling-past-Doctors

I don't blame her, but I still feel like she helped in her own way by trying to talk sense into him. ...and now I've suddenly found myself wondering what Jamie's reaction would be like if he ever witnessed a regeneration (considering his reaction to meeting Six in The Two Doctors, I imagine it would probably be as surprised as anyone else's. On the other hand, if it was Two's regeneration he was seeing...)
It just occurred to me that Post-Regeneration Brain-Crazies might have sometimes to do with the Doctor's tendency to die in strange and unusual ways. Actually, there's actually a part in Cold Fusion where Five explains how a normal regeneration is supposed to happen:
"The process is not without its dangers, and is never easy. Special mental preparation is usually required, the regeneration itself should ideally take place within an area subject to a low-grade telepathic field. If possible, another one of my race should be there to assist in the case of difficulty, to coax and guide the regenerative process. After regenerating,

The Doctor's first regeneration was the only time he regenerated due to old age. All the rest have been violent deaths. That might have something to do with the greater trauma he goes through.
Oh man, now I want a .gif of Five spinning around in circles in that wheelchair. Because. I want one too. Is there anyone out there willing? Please?
I felt so bad for Adric in this one. Poor kid.
The Master has some weird fetishes.
Mirror hug was strange as well. At least someone gets hugged, right?
Poor Davison doesn't like celery.
I freaked with the lipstick. I was like "OMG! What is that??"
Not the original/older scarf, so it's completely ok.
I love the bucket helmets. *laughs* I found some bukkits! (Sorry. Bad joke.)
When I saw event one, I knew there was trouble.
He has very few regenerations that go well, as we all know. I think this one and the next one are the worst. (Strangling companions is not a good sign.) The last one with the Eleventh Doctor wasn't too bad. A few jerks and a bit of energy being released, but he seemed to recover rather well.
This was a messed up story. That's really all I can say.
I don't remember the last time I've had such an intense pillow-hugging session after watching something. I was going to do a hug-tiem-for-Adric drawing after watching Earthshock, but now I feel like I should do it in a more canonical (post-Castrovalva) context.
I thought it was blood on the wall even BEFORE it started running...
Six to Seven might have been okay, we'll never know exactly what the Rani's intervention did there. And of course we'll never know how Eight to Nine went (thanks, RTD. Grrrgh.) But I can't imagine he was a happy camper.
Romana had much more precise control over her regneration from Romana One to Romana Two, to the point where she could flick through several possible bodies before settling on the Princess Astra form.
It is implied that the Master's previous incarnations looked more or less like Delgado.
In the 90s novels, it is implied by Seven that one of the reasons he has such a hard time with regeneraion is that "it was meant to be done slowly, in a medical facility, with assistance."
Anyway, back to the story. I liked the subplot with Tegan thinking that one guy was the Master, and the concept of Castrovalva itself.
In the documentary I mentioned they show Romana's regeneration, and they comment to the controversy saying that her level of control is the whole point of the sequence - to reinforce the fact that anything the Doctor can do, she can do a million times better. And like Arcalian says, RTD used it as base for the "15 hour regeneration" explanation - and, I feel, for the Master apparently choosing his next form (at least that's what his "If the Doctor can be young and strong then so can I" seems to imply).

It's sad when the first thing you think of is blood when you see red in the TARDIS.

I think the level of control she had was what made it so controversial amongst fans. I haven't seen it yet, but I hear it's almost alarmingly casual.

I think RTD came up with that "15 hour regeneration" thing with Ten's hand partly because of this. -Arcalian
