"Busy?" I contiue, noting the dish rag in his left hand.
He frowns, crossing his arms. "Hey is all I get now?"
Of course not!
I laugh, making him give a grin of his own.
"WILL!!!!!" I scream, grabbing him and pratically hugging him to the ground.
After taking my worn bag and the need-to-replace jacket, he led me like the pefect host to the purple living room couch. The house was pleasently warm, making me feel a bit drowsy.
Which led me to question why he was wearing a SWEATER.
"Why are you wearing a sweater?"
He blushes, mumbling "I just got over a cold and Gabe....."
He did look a bit pale, a bit too thin, even for him.
I push, enjoying my fun at his expense.
"Gabe?"
"Threatened to skin me alive if I took this-" he tugs at his sweater "-off."
"What a good Bilvy!" I poke him, laughing at his blush that has filled his pale cheeks.
"Thanks, Sisk-low." He teases back.
I poke him again, he pokes me. This soon results into a 10 minute 'Poke Fight' that ends as Will begins to giggle.
"Where`s Puro?" I ask, glancing around the house. Usually Puro is around Will at all times.
"He`s with the Sterns`. Their dog just died and I...I thought maybe they would like Puro`s company for a while." he says, blushing.
"That`s sweet."
"I had to do something. Poor Lucybell..."
Lucybell was Will`s nickname for Lucy. She was obessed with Tinkerbell, so he simply took out Tinker and put Lucy in.
She absolutely adored the nickname.
She also adored the attention, since her brother, Mitchell Nathaniel Stern, came into the picture a month ago.
"It`s sweet that you did that. What was the pet`s name?"
"Wayne. He was a 11 year old black lab."
"Poor Wayne."
"Did you get the video I asked for?"
Busy as always.
"Will...are you sure about this?" I ask, noting his sad eyes and now clutched together hands.
The video he was talking about, the video I had, was the news coverage of his funeral. I wasn`t sure what he wanted to know about this coverage. It was an hour full of tears, pain...and his family.
Heaven forbid should he see his dad.
"Sisky....I have to see. I have to see...." he said, tears filled his eyes.
"Why?" I say, grabbing him and tugging him closer to me. "Why do you have to see?"
The tears cover his face.
"B-Because I-I h-have t-to s-see why t-they thought I-I was d-dead."
That was NO reason..
"Will-" I say over his quiet sobbing. "Will you don`t have to see that."
He contiues to sob.
"Will...please. Don`t see this. Please."
"I have to." he whispers, the sobs now gone from his voice.
He`s detaching.
"Will-"
"Please Sisky. Please watch this with me..Please."
How can you resist that?
"Fine." I put the tape in, watching the news achor announce what the coverage is. I clutch Will closer, waiting for his reaction to his 'death'.
The news doomed in on a 15-year-old picture of Will. It was a school one, so it was nice.
Will was dressed in a v-neck purple shirt, blue jeans and sandels. He had long hair, up to his shoulders.
"Today is a sad day for the town of Barrington. Today is the funeral of supposed deceased 16-year-old William Eugene Beckett Junior. William was kidnapped Febuary 1st on a rainy day while walking to a friend`s house only 10 days before his 16th birthday. Police declared him dead only a week ago, stating his file is cold. Today, the population of Barrington gather to mourn the loss of William 'Sunshine' Beckett." the voiceover said.
The view changed, flashing to a old church setting. The pews filled with people, all dressed in bright colors.
Flash to Courtney Beckett, dressed in a yellow sundress with white flats, clutching the picture of deceased Mrs. Helen Beckett.
Flash to the huddled pair of 14 year old Adam T. Siska, dressed in Will`s brown leather jacket with a red polo, black dress pants and converses, clutching the hand of 15 year Micheal Carden, dressed in a green dress shirt, black pants and red converses.
Flash to the stern Mr. Beckett, dressed in a black suit.
Flash to the Pastor at the front, ready to make his speech.
"We gather to mourn the loss of the lovely sunshine Will Beckett...."
*6 hours later*
General Pov
"Will?" says a soft whisper, peeking his brown nose through the door to survey the house.
"Will?" he says again, dropping his bags by the door in panic. He rushes through the house, examing each room until he reaches the living room and...he spots him.
Rushing towards him, he sees him breathe and lets out a sigh.
Will is curled up on the sofa, wrapped in blankets up to his adorable little nose. Gabe smiles at that, and kisses it softly.
He HAD to make sure...
"Gabe?" the tired voice of Sisky says, peering around from the kitchen. "You`re home early."
Gabe smiles, simply looking at his lover`s face. "Recorded fast."
Sisky smiles, bringing out his yellow teacup that smells peppy. Must be Will`s Pep tea.
Gabe glances toward the now blue-screen TV, "What did you guys watch?"
Sisky pales and says nothing.
"Sisky..."
"We watched his funeral." a low whisper returns.
All Gabe can do, in his shock, was swallow. To him it sounded like loud beats of a drum into the silent room.
Outside, all you could hear was soft waves go back down.
"How-"
Sisky sat by Will`s legs, saying "I had a tape copy. Will insisted I bring it."
It figured that Will wanted to know.
"And how, how was he during it?"
Sisky bows his head, mumbling "Depressing. It shook him up, really badly."
Gabe points a finger to the tape, asking "Can I watch?"
Sisky merely swallows, glancing towards the sleeping Will. "Sure. If you want."
All Gabe can do is nod as he rewinds. The cover begins, the paster speaks his paragraph. Then, it`s turn for speeches of friends and family.
A sad Sisky begins to walk up to the stage, holding onto the gold microphone that Will cherished. It was a cheap, fake-gold microphone, but to Will it was true treasure.
A sob, then Sisky started "Will and I have been best friends since we were diapers. It seemed like fate paired us up. He was always the wild, out there kind of kid who wanted to see and explore everything. Every part of Barry, as he called our little town, he examined head to toe. Lots of adventures happened, and if I named them all, we would be here a year!"
Small laughter, several faint smiles.
Sisky contiues "I remember the best few. The day he sang the song 'Funkytown' for the school play. When he was four and brought our new crewmember Mike "Cardy" Carden to us. When he was seven, and fell out of Mrs. Gates` apple tree. When he was nine, he ran his bike into a maple tree. The day he was the clown at the church fair. When he was 13, he was shot by a hunter. When he 14, he brought the last of our duo, Ryan "RyRy" Ross to us. We were always together. We stuck by each other. And it seems unfair that our duo has lost its Sunshine to contiue."
A crying Sisky takes a moment, then bravely contiues to face the church.
"This microphone was his treasure. Fake-gold, yet it shined in his eyes. Bared only with a sticker that says 'Breathe'. That is what Will was known for. BREATHING life into us."
Another sob.
"I just wish that Will had more time to breathe life into cities all over the world. Breathe life into other states. Breathe life into the Good Ole Miss USA. He...he would have done so much. I love you Wilvy, Bilvy, Bill, Bill-Boy, Sunshine...and I always will. WE always will."
Tears found on Sisky`s face, both on tape and in the present.
"Love Cardy, RyRy, and Sisk-low."
Gabe pauses the tape, glancing at the crying Sisky who is desparetly trying to control himself. He pulls him towards him, hugging the shaking friends who has been with Will through everything.
"I couldn`t believe he was alive. It seemed to cope better with thinking he was gone." a low whisper came from his now soaking shoulder. "That he was-happy, and free."
"Hon, he is in a better place. He`s in a house with his partner who loves him, with one of his best of the best friends."
Sisky glances over at the still sleeping Will, smiling a faint smile. "He is."
All Gabe can do is nod and hug Sisky closer.
After a few minutes of sobbing and tears, Sisky straightens and gives Gabe a warm smile.
"I`m glad he found you, Gabey."
"Shall we contiue?"
Sisky pauses, and Gabe lets him. Sisky is in control, and he won`t push him.
"Sure. Up next should be Courtney`s statement."
"Ready or not, here we come." Gabe mocks, resuming the tape.
A still crying Courtney Joyce Beckett walks to the front, carrying the picture of her mother and a few pieces of paper. She looks like a mess.
"I-I have a letter from my mom, dating a few months after his...." she sobs "kidnapping. She writes
My darling Loverboy,
I am so proud to be your mother. I just want you to know that. Though you were a pain to deliever Mr. 18-hours-in-labor, almost 9 pounds baby boy- you always made my day. You were always curious, always exploring. It was always exciting to see you accomplish so much. You gave the good town of Barrington quite a few scares-including your bullet wound- but it kept the town on its feet."
More laughter, more tears from the audience as they think of memories.
"To other people, they often question why I call you 'Loverboy'. You knew the answer. Ever since I first showed you one of my favorite movies, Dirty Dancing, you always loved that song. Couldn`t wait til the movie reached that part where you could sing quite loudly your favorite song."
Gabe paused it again, turning to Sisky "That`s his favorite song?"
Sisky nodded, saying "Of ALL time."
Gabe noted his new discovery, and hit PLAY again.
Thank god you had a wonderful singing voice, my love.
Laughter erupted throughout the church, as everyone laughed at this bold statement. Even Courtney laughed through her tears.
In the living room, Sisky was gasping for breath. He had forgotten Mrs. Beckett`s sense of humor.
Gabe himself laughed a few giggles, somewhat suprised at Mrs. Beckett`s humor.
"Are you guys watching this again?" Will now joined in, moving to sit up. Gabe helped, forcing Will to lay against his chest as Sisky put Will`s feet on his lap.
Thankfully Gabe had paused the tape to contiue.
"Yes, we are. Is that ok?" Sisky asked.
Will looked from the TV to Gabe, to Sisky. Taking a breath, he nodded his head.
"Alright." Gabe said, hitting PLAY again.
I`m sad to see that my now 16-year-old child, my firstborn, my Loverboy, is gone before I. It doesn`t bring comfort, only worry about what I did wrong.
Courtney paused, bringing herself under control.
But all I want to say my love is I love you. I love you William Eugene, and I always will.
Love-"
Another sob, then she quietly whispered
Love Mom.
Courtney sobbed, the colors of her once gleaming skin paled. Her brown hair looked lifeless, her yellow dress didn`t shine as it once did.
Sobbing, she pulled out another piece of paper, tucking the letter and the picture on Will`s casket.
"I just wanted to say a few words about the best brother who ever lived. Wilvy Beckett, my Billiam."
Another sob.
"Dear Will,
I can`t believe you are gone. For the last 12 years of my life, you have always been there. Through stiches, bruises, fights with friends and birthdays, you always brought a sunshine glow to wherever you go. Will.....Will Thanks for saving me, for helping me, for making me see the real world."
A sob, tears decorated her face.
"You were nicknamed the 'Sunshine of Barry'. How true that is! From fun f'amily games of Bingo' at the local council house, to helping at the nursing home. Helping Mrs. Higgins with her garden, creating a Music Night at the local night for the teens. You made our community better and improved."
"HERE HERE!" someone cried from the crowd. Soon, more cheers joined.
"Thank you, thank you. Will, it`s sad to see such a wonderful, caring, curious, smart, talented figure go so soon. But that doesn`t change the fact that forever Barrington 'Barry' will be changed by your impact. Your friends will forever be changed by you. I was changed by you. I love you. So much.
Love and Kisses Forever my Angel
Firefly"
Keeping a smile, she folded up her paper, along with her mother`s letter and picture, and said with a frown "Now, my Dad wants to make a statement."
The room went silent, the joy and laughter gone like it never existed. Mr. Beckett, a late 40s man with gray hair and a strong build, walked forth to the front.
Picking a lint from his freshly pressed black suit he started "My son-"
"How dare you call him a son you bas-" the present Sisky screamed at the TV, furious at the man.
Gabe paused it, worrying about the man who contiued to swear at the TV.
"Sisky, calm down." the gentle Will soothed, grabbing Sisky. "Please Sisky, calm down. It`s ok..."
"HOW can you be so calm? How can you NOT be angry at the man who tortured you for 15 YEARS of your life? How can you be so calm when he bruised you, he hit you, he locked you OUT of the house SO many times?"
Gabe took the info in, shocked. Glancing at the still calm Will, he started "Maybe we should..."
"We`re finishing."
Sisky was still furious. "HOW on earth could you be so FORGIVING?"
"Because I`m not going to get angry, Sisk. I`m going to be angry, for that I would want revenge. That is his level."
"His level?"
"His level of hurting and bruises to prove himself. I am not my father, I refuse. I choose to forgive. I choose to serve. I choose to create and explore. I am not going to let 15 years of torture take my life away."
Silence.
"Will-Will I`m sorry."
"Sisky, I forgive you. I love you."
"Are you sure you want.."
"Yes. I need to see this. Gabe needs to see this. So contiue, Gabey."
"My son was a brillant spokesperson. He was loud, energetic, happy and eager. I wish I had some of that stuff to lead you. I wish he could`ve used his talents to change the world. Now, we have two members, Will and Helen, gone."
"How he wished it!" Sisky mumbled.
"But I predict that the town of Barrington can recover. For Will`s sake. We can keep him alive in our hearts. And never forget his wonderful engery, his talent and joy. Thank you."
The news flashed back to the anchorwomen.
"That was the funeral of 16-year-old William Beckett. May his spirit and joy live forever in our hearts. Signing off, this is Synthia Ward, Channel 5 news."
The tape ended, the screen went to blue.
Gabe looked at both Sisky and Will`s faces. Both, in the last few minutes or so since Sisky`s comment, had drifted to sleep in each other`s arms. It was cute.
"Sweet dreams, Loverboy and Sisk-low." Gabe whispered as he turned off the light.
He knew that Sisky has overcome a huge wall today. Facing the fact that he believed Will was gone.
He knew Will had overcome his fear of being his father.
"I love you William. And I always will, my heart." he said as he slipped the engagement ring on Will`s finger.
