I always knew he was good, but seriously...

Jordan Rudess' response to Mike Portnoy leaving Dream Theater: an improvisation on his Steinway. He gets right into it and even does some ad hoc vocals (which aren't very good, but are heartfelt). asylum_at_sea, I don't know if you like Dream Theater but I think you might get a kick out of this, especially.

I really enjoyed that, very evocative of Dream Theater in a way but also distinctively melancholic. Sometimes you forget that once he's forcibly seperated from his wah wah effects Jordan Rudess can REALLY play.

Was nice to meet you in real life, by the way.

No worries, always a pleasure to see people from LJ IRL!

Coffins were excellent, my friend Ash described them as the heaviest thing out of Japan since the Yamato.

Yeah, that description's about right - they were utterly crushing. I can't believe those bastards have any hearing left. Gospel were pretty bloody good too - I've not been that impressed with their studio stuff but live they're killer.

To be fair, the guy is a musical prodigy, so most people who've been playing for their entire lives would probably watch that and weep. It's good to be inspired though.

Heh, I celebrated when I heard about this! Then again I hate this band, they were terrible when I saw them at Hellfest, I was subjected to them too much in high school, and I'm terribly callous about bands I can't stand so I probably pissed off a few people with that. :)

Actually, maybe DT will improve with his departure. I realize that DT was in a lot of ways Portnoy's band but I've always vastly preferred the solo work of the other members. I seriously think Portnoy dragged them down in a big way in terms of quality.

Literally, my first feeling was surprise, which rapidly transformed to "meh".

I understand that the hero worship of DT is infuriating. It's why I've sort of gotten tired of them. The problem is, though, that I actually think their solo stuff is by and large boring as fuck. When they were on song, DT were a force to be reckoned with. And while I think Portnoy has been bad for them the last few albums, at first he was one of the driving forces behind them, and I'm not sure if they'd be where they are today without him.

I definitely won't miss his vocal work, I'll tell you that much...
