Question for f-list

And considering the books he grew up with, liadnan is probably a likely candidate.

Set at least partly in Edinburgh in the 16th or 17th century (I think most likely 16th), it involved a university student who got involved in some intrigue. For that time, he was probably a St Andrew's student (in fact, I think he was). There was definitely a mention of plague, but I cannot remember if it was an epidemic in the city or if the city was under attack. The golf links at Leith was also mentioned and the main character had a friend who played there. I think the friend was executed for his part in the intrigue.

Sorry, this got triggered while up visiting fidrabooks yesterday, and it occurred to me that it might ring some bells with my f-list.

Considering the age I read it at, and that it was almost certainly bought for an older sister or came into the family before I was reading it, and it was a paperback, I think it was probably a paperback in the 1970s. Not a Puffin, but I could be wrong.

I don't think it's a Geoffrey Trease, but certainly I recall it as being by an author who didn't talk down to their readers.

Anyone got any ideas?
