Submit: Poetry (Tears, Idle Tears)

Sep 18, 2005 13:21

The theme for week sixty-three is the poem Tears, Idle Tears by Lord Alfred Tennyson because it's a beautiful poem with flavourful language but meaningful to this icontest/CLAMP's works (and the upcoming season) nonetheless. We also haven't done a poetry challenge in a while.

You may submit one CLAMP icon as long as it features at least three consecutive words from the poem provided. The order counts for the first three words but afterwards you can take a bit more liberty rearranging them so long as you don't misrepresent what the verses mean. You may substitue alternate characters for words when appropriate the most common example being replacing and with &.

You are not allowed to incorporate any external text into your icon, I won't get overly anal about tiny ilegible text used purely as decoration though as much as possible keep it poem related. Speaking of tiny text if the only text on your icon (i.e. the minimum three word requirement) is too small for me to read without squinting kindly provide a translation so I know which part of the lyrics you used. Please check your spelling and wording before submitting, it's easy to make a mistake the first time around.

Tears, Idle Tears
Lord Alfred Tennyson

Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean,
Tears from the depth of some divine despair
Rise in the heart, and gather to the eyes,
In looking on the happy Autumn-fields,
And thinking of the days that are no more.

Fresh as the first beam glittering on a sail,
That brings our friends up from the underworld,
Sad as the last which reddens over one
That sinks with all we love below the verge;
So sad, so fresh, the days that are no more.

Ah, sad and strange as in dark summer dawns
The earliest pipe of half-awakened birds
To dying ears, when unto dying eyes
The casement slowly grows a glimmering square;
So sad, so strange, the days that are no more.

Dear as remembered kisses after death,
And sweet as those by hopeless fancy feigned
On lips that are for others; deep as love,
Deep as first love, and wild with all regret;
O Death in Life, the days that are no more.

Aside from that everything is up to you when it comes to selecting the perfect verse from the poem and matching it to your chosen series/character imagery. As always, be creative and have some fun.

Answer this question at the original post. I just need to know whether or not I can reveal your username in connection with an icon submission when asked. I won't give people permission to use your work, I'll just send them to your journal/ijournal to ask you personally for your permission and your rules for credit.
