Even Edward Knows Bella is a Mary Sue

In case anyone missed it, Twilight, based on the book by Stephanie Meyers, opened in theaters today. Since the worst part about the book was the writing, I was curious about whether the movie could be better and checked out some of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, the top critics seemed to have liked it better, generally speaking, ( Read more... )

I've not read Twilight and don't have any plans to, but that is one interesting interview with the actor of the main male lead in the movie. I am guessing he had accepted the role before reading the books?

I don't know why, but I thought that the Twilight books were teenage fiction...is this a misconception on my part or has teenage fiction moved on from the Sweet Valley High books I used to read as a teen and moved towards erotica?

I don't really know, but that's what I would guess, as well. He probably thought the script seemed worthwhile and then, after getting the part, read the books for more information on his character.

*lol* It is definitely teenage fiction. I never read any of that when I was a teenager, so I don't know how it compares with most. It's not really erotica because there's nothing beyond snogging - it's just written in a way that conveys a lot of romantic/sexual tension. So, although, in general, the book isn't well written, it's successful in that aspect. (ETA: Assuming that was the intention, anyway.)

That's amazing that Pattinson said that! And I agree with him - it's a fantasy, and that's why Bella becomes rather irritating when she just gives up her whole life to Edward so quickly. It's not realistic, and it's not supposed to be.

My daughter isn't a teenager anymore, but she's just turned 21. And she agreed that these books are like a guilty pleasure for people who don't usually read romance novels.

But I'll say one thing for Stephanie Meyer - there's more passion and tension in her books than in all of Harry Potter. I can't imagine JKR writing a complete romance like that.

Why would people who don't usually read romance novels like to read these books do you think?
