Last weekend, my dad invited me to go shooting with him; he had been invited by a friend of his who is involved with firearms in a big way (so is my dad for that matter). So I went along, and got to shoot some really interesting weapons ( Read more... )

Oooo! Did you get to use any of them? That looks really fun!

I was always under the impression that Commonwealth countries adhered to the English ideal of banning guns altogether.

I learned how to shoot in the Scouts and it been fun ever since. Even V was no fan of guns until I dragged her to a range. Now the roles are reversed. She loves plunking away with our .22 pistol.

I shot virtually all of them; I didn't shoot the R-4, but that's because I had enough of it in the army. I must have gone through 300 rounds or more, in total.

We do have pretty strict gun control nowadays, but there are exceptions made for bona-fide collectors.

I've got one of the M91s. Still has the Soviet stamp on it, from 1941. Kicks like a mule. Scares the piss out of any Germans nearby.

Well spotted. that's what it was. Bloody hard bolt-action, big kick, and a hassle to load (one has to make sure to load the rimmed cartridges correctly, or they have to be pried out after firing.

I still miss my days with the Engineers, when I was the company's M2 .50cal machine gunner...

I am so proud of myself/embarrassed at my history nerdiness. I saw the picture before I even read "Vickers," and the name leapt immediately to mind. Gosh, I'm a WWI nerd. It's odd.

Oh, and lucky you, by the way.
