LJ Idol: Week Five - "Open Topic"

Oct 25, 2008 06:36

I've been feeling a bit... hopeless about the world lately and was reading through some of my archives looking for a poem that I remembered being an echo of my feelings. Instead, I came across this, a post I wrote back in 2004. I had completely forgotten about this day and as I read it, I found my spirits lifting.

This is why I have this journal. ( Read more... )

That's a sweet story. I think you're justified in thinking the nun was a sign from above that the cat would be taken care of. Maybe he was simply put there to make people think twice, to be a little kinder, to have a better day.

You know - I never thought of it that way. I do believe that we live in a world with beings we can't see - but to think that it might have been just a little 'helper' to remind people of kindness - oh, that just takes my breath away thinking about.

Thank you for giving me that perspective!

My father refuses to neuder his dogs, and it drives me crazy! I agree that it's totally irresponsible behavior.

This was a very nice entry. I hope the kitty cat is okay, wherever he ended up.

I have a co-worker who went through the whole 'but I want her to experience being a mom!' argument with me when I kept telling her to get her cat spayed. It made me so angry but what can you do?

Thank you for this story.

Last summer a local stray whom I started calling Snowball took up residence on my back porch. He, too, was a very friendly but un-fixed male cat. And, for a few weeks, he would sit on the back porch and my cat, Creamsickle, would sit inside and they would stare at each other through the glass door. I knew that they would fight (or try to mate) if I let Snowball inside.

One day, when I was leaving to go do some research at Natural Bridge in Virginia, Snowball tried to jump into my house. He then followed me into my car. I was so tempted to take him with me. To take him to a shelter, maybe. Or, even, to take him to my friends in WV where I was staying for the weekend, who have a few acres in the mountains where he could roam.

But, instead I shooed him out of the car. Every once in a while I'll see him in the neighborhood, but he doesn't camp out anymore.

I wanted so much to take this one in, but at some point, the love and responsibility for the animals you already have has to kick in. That doesn't make it easier though when we come face to face with the less fortunate.

I think this applies to people just as much as it does to animals.
