I liked reading the reviews and went to have a look at Julian May's Intervention to see if I might want to read it. Not sure though and have a few books waiting, so not now.

If you do then be aware that it's part of a double series each of which makes reference to the other; hard to explain without spoilers, but IMO you can enter either at "The Many-Coloured Land" or at "Intervention". TMCL was first in publication order though.
