Yeah, I'm with you. I certainly don't own my cats, and people thinking of animals as possessions is a big problem--but the word choice issue is something that's unlikely to change anytime soon. Better to educate people on specifics like not keeping dogs chained up outside all the time and spay/neuter.
I don't consider my dog as property, but I often use the term "owner". Balanced relationship? Of course. But not in a "the dog is my equal" kind of way
