In the evening, we went over to the farm that they get a box of veggies every week from. It's a program they're in on, and the farm has picnics for their customers. Good food, neat people and a beautiful piece of land! The fields they farm are laid out in a bowl, so there's a really gorgeous view of everything. If we ever wind up in the Madison area, I want to get in on that sort of thing.Sounds like a CSA (community-supported agriculture) sort of thing. There are some around here, and some of us locals have participated (me, Mel & Jerry, Desiree, Sam, et al.). I liked it, but it takes a large chunk of change at the beginning of the season, which I haven't been able to swing the past few years
( ... )
CSA is what they've got! They had a little work barter, but that amounted to one day of picking peas for Carrie. The picnic seems to be a community thing the farming family likes to do. They've got young kids, and the kids evidently love the picnics.
It's too late this year, but worth thinking about for next year! It would be nice to have that sort of assortment of veggies without having to do the shopping.
We belong to Greenspirit Farm in Dodgeville. They have a drop point in Spring Green, which works well for our living out in the sticks life. ;)
WRT the large chunk of change bit, they allow you to pay half now, half in July. AND we got $200 from our health insurance provider for joining, so that mostly covered the July payment. :) And yes, I did a work share, wherin one of us had to work for six hours on the farm some time during the season. Saved us $75 off the price, and it was fun! Even though I was afraid the pea monster would come eat me.
I Love CSA they are really cool we belong to Vermont Valley in the Blue Mounds area and have for 6 years they even have connection for fruit and eggs and cheese. When we are organized we do little summer food shopping. We also get some fun "u-Picks" where we like this saturday can go and pick 15 pounds of tomatoes, hot peppers and possibly some basil we will make freezer salsa, and freeze some toms for future use. In a couple weeks we will have "pesto fest" and make a ton of pesto at the farm. we also get $$ from out health insurance to cover it. I wish we could do a worker share. Just don't have the time that is kid free.
We looked at them too, but Greenspirit was cheaper. And since we'd never done a CSA before, we didn't want to go crazy and spend a ton of money and then be unhappy.
Ah.. but were there people sitting on the couch reading magazines or playing video games?
I really want to look into some type of farmer's co-op where we get a crate of veggies and stuff each week. Not having to shop is good, having a bunch of stuff I need to eat that is better for me than the mostly protien diet we eat now is better (and that doesn't say anything to the benefits over take-out)!
