Random stuff, a request, and a nifty link

Last night was fun, though I do really remember bits and pieces. Minimal hangover, adding credence to the theory that if you stick with one kind of booze, it doesn't hit you as bad the next day. I really should have eaten something more substantial before drinking, though ( Read more... )

Lessee, what else ...

I found Richard Cheese amusing to sample.

Kathy Mar's music is lovely.

Hard to know what else to recommend. On iTunes, I managed to locate a lot of the songs I first heard on a tape Heron made me back at OU. If anything occurs to me as I listen, I'll let you know.

Lessee ...

Annie Lennox - If you are not an Annie Lennox fan, then you should be. My favorite albums of hers are Diva and Medusa, but anything's awesome.

Cheb Mami - You may have heard him if you've heard Sting's song "Desert Rose"--Mami is the counterpoint singer. He is a popular singer of raï (popular music of the Middle East; a sort of pastiche of music from a lot of places around the world). I have his album Dellali.

Basia (aka Basia Trzerzelewska) - Her jazz album Time and Tide is brilliant. Her others are all right, but that one is stellar.

This one may be hard to find, but the album Oceania by Hinewehi Mohi with Jaz Coleman is the first to mix traditional Maori music with contemporary sounds. It's really good.

I'll let you know if I think of any more!

The only time on Sting's tour for that album that he had Cheb with him live was in Dubai. And I was there to see it. Totally amazing. Cheb's really popular in that part of the world, so he got almost as much a fuss as Sting did. They even did a couple of his songs with Sting doing back-up, and one of the encours was one of Cheb's as well.

He was GOING to sing with Sting in Italy--they even have it in dress rehearsal on the DVD, with a belly dancer and everything--but the concert, unfortunately, was scheduled for September 11, 2001. The show went on (the reasoning being "Screw the terrorists"), but Mami did not appear--which was an understandable decision, given the emotional climate.

I think you can find the music video for "Le rai c'est chic" if you google it.

I have a lap full of 17-year-old kitty, because the best guess at his birthday is April 5.
