I posted my own bit of snarkyness on this issue back in 2002, when the problem was first becoming apparent. The upper eschelons of our government seem very addept at shooting themselves in the foot whenever a crisis arrises. Much of this is due to obsession over things that are completely irrelevant, while ignoring the massive problem waiting to blow up in their face.

Of course, why anyone would want to join the millitary right now is beyond me given the mess we're in, but that's another topic for another day.
