This might sound like a dumb question, but I was just wondering if there are any websites that tell you the approximate cost for a cab ride from one end of town to another

There is an online fare finder that does include Los Angeles: http://www.taxifarefinder.com/info.php?city=LA

It should give you an idea of what it might cost, though their fare estimates seem a bit on the low side.
