Can anyone recommend (preferably with some links!) some Japanese books or shows for kids, which I could use to ease into reading and hearing the language?
Well, these might be helpful, but I'm not really looking for textbooks, so much as kids' books. Books that young kids read for fun. Something more like Where the Wild Things Are or Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, only original Japanese books for young readers. I figure stuff like that would be the best way to ease myself into reading in Japanese.
If you haven't looked yet, J-List has many awesome manga books and whatnot that are designed to be plucked through by people just learning Japanese...I would totally devour those if'n I were you.
I've been poking around the site, but I'm finding it kind of labyrinthine and I'm not sure how to find what I'm looking for, exactly. I'm pretty picky about what I read, narrative-wise, so I'm fairly tentative about picking a series at this point. I was hoping to maybe find the books that are popular for Japanese kids who are just learning to read and write, and then once I get a bit better, move on to monogatari for young readers. Surely, if I found the right manga, that would be keen, but 1. a lot less text in a manga than in a book, and 2. I'm not sure how to figure out which ones I would like. There are certainly some that I've already read in translation, which I know I'd enjoy, but they might be a bit too wordy or techno-babble-y for me at this point.
