To post or not, that is the question.

So, I don't know, I'm kind of torn about this. I have one Word document on my computer that is about 15 pages long that just contains fic ideas, outlines, and some very initial beginnings. That's in addition to probably about 10 or so more pages in other documents for fic that is farther along. I have never considered posting my WiPs, and I really ( Read more... )

You could, maybe, post bits of three stories and ask which one people most want to read? That might be quite helpful in terms of motivation!

Also, when a new obsession strikes-crossovers!

Hm, I do like that idea actually, that would probably help me focus at least. I think I will try that. Thanks! And my gosh, crossovers! So don't need to be adding to my list of ideas. haha

I've only ever posted a couple of WiPs (which were really single scenes that grew out of control). While on the one hand it was nice to get comments, and it did give me motivation to ultimately finish them, it also felt a bit like a millstone in that I was constantly aware of them being out there, and intermittently feeling guilty for not writing them faster. I'm also perfectly happy to keep changing things after I've made them public, and still fiddle with story files *years* after they first went up. If you don't like doing that, then it sounds like posting WiPs could be negative for your writing process.

That's part of what I'm worried about too, that once I post something that's unfinished it will just sit there and dig at me, and it'll be detrimental to the whole writing process. Thanks for the advice. That's really cool that you can edit things after you've published them though; do you make significant changes after things are published, or just change the wording, or...? I think part of my problem too is that when I was younger I used to write long drawn-out novels that never got finished, so I really trained myself to focus as much as I could on a story and then let it go. lol

Oh, I'll change anything I feel needs to be changed. If I suddenly came up with a great idea that required a major rewrite, I'd probably do it. On the other hand, I sometimes don't post stories for years after I've finished them, because I'm not convinced they're right yet, so most of the really big changes get done at that stage.

I did several pretty big rewrites of parts of the post-apocalypse after they went up, but I did have a disclaimer on every section saying it could happen.

so I really trained myself to focus as much as I could on a story and then let it go.I like working on a bunch of different things at once. I always have...well, dozens, really, of unfinished stories sitting around, but all of them genuinely and honestly could get finished one day. One of the stories I wrote for MtYG last year had the concept and part of the opening scene sat ( ... )
