I heard it from a stranger

I'm reading this book, and one of the characters in it gets in a little accident. It's a little accident involving his head and a saw blade. Don't get too worried, though - he ends up perfectly fine. Actually, "perfectly fine" may be going a little far - he's in fine health, but he ends up with Tourette's-like symptoms (my words, not the author' ( Read more... )

Yes, it is Alex, and I'm enjoying it so far.

I appreciated how the book starts off with Alex and his interesting command of the English language. It gives the reader something amusing and strange to dive into, sort of setting the tone for the overall book. And as for language mistakes, my favorites are how he says his Grandfather is "retarded" and so he doesn't have to work (it took me just a little bit to understand he meant "retired"), and that he says he is "fluid" in English.

i love how he obviously uses the thesaurus to get big complex words that are synonyms but don't quite work. i'll have to bounce a friend's opinion of a later development in the book off you, but i'll wait until you're done.

"Blade lodged in head that can't be removed because it would cause death" is part of the backstory for a character from a strange Japanese video game called Bust a Groove 2. In his case it's an ax that his son tried to kill him with, and it seems to have turned him into a zombie of some kind. Bust a Groove is a dancing game, kind of like Dance Dance Revolution, and I'm happy to say that this character dances like the zombies from the "Thriller" video.

I like Bust a Move, but that seems like an entirely different game.

Yeah, it's called Bust a Move in Japan, but they couldn't call it that here because there was already a game by that name. One that has no undead and is therefore inferior.
