Norewescon continued

Just got back, and a rambly report follows behind the cut. But I must share my first laugh-out-loud moment, which actually happened in the parking lot: a bevy of SCA-esque, medievally garbed folks chatting on cell phones. Heh.

I came via the bus, which actually worked out better than I had expected. I chose the shorter itinerary with only 1 transfer but where I had to walk from 4th & Spokane street to 1st & Spokane street. It's a longer walk than it sounds, as the blocks down there are industrial-sized, but it wasn't bad even with the rain. The only problem I had was the stopped gutters in a couple of places had turned the crosswalks into small lakes, but I leapt all but one with a might bound each, and I managed to land in a fairly shallow area on the occasion where I failed clearance.

I got my badge & registration packet, which included two DAW anthologies, one SF and one Fantasy - DAW being the featured publisher of the con. Then I parked myself in the coffee bar to look the schedule over and mark up my pocket program with my plans. It turns out icebluenothing has a reading and all sorts of scheduled panels, huzzah for him! prncsmoonbeam is also putting in an appearance; there is quite the costuming/fashion track this year, and a fair bit of it focuses on the gothic.

Then I actually attended Opening Ceremonies, which I don't usually manage due to usually being unable to attend any of Thursday. It was quite amusing, although I was sad that when Lois McMaster Bujold mentioned being in the Pacific NW a few times before she didn't mention VikingCon, only signing-tours with stops at the UW bookstore. Ah well.

Then it was off to smarier's dance, where I actually danced much more than I expected to, and was glad I had worn my Converse. Lots of fun, even if the crowd did show the usual regrettable tendency not to want to dance to anything unfamiliar. I had to leave early to catch a reasonable bus home, since I didn't run into anyone I could cadge a ride from.

Sitting in the coffee bar I did see a number of folks, none of whom recognized me, but I wasn't having much luck catching people's eye, either. This time around I imagine the folks who've seen me post-surgery are still expecting long hair, and I was dressed comparatively conservatively in my Sisters tour shirt and cargo shorts with tights. Not the sort of thing that is going to make much notice compared to corsets, cleavage, and cat-suits, whee-la.

Back tomorrow after a couple of early morning appointments, I'm aiming for a 3:00 p.m. panel about the role of the villain called Because I'm Evil. With luck, the buses will continue to cooperate with my plans as smoothly as they did today.
