REVIEWS FOR JULY 3, 2008

Jul 03, 2008 21:39

Only two books today, but one has a long review where I rant and rant about things that have nothing to do with the book itself so… Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking, but it took me a while to write so I am going to post it anyway.

Batman 678 and Crossing Midnight 19 after the cut... )

morrison, batman, reviews

The Mystical Black Man bugged the hell out of me as soon as I realized what it was.

I do like the (fanwanky) idea that the diary at the beginning is meant to show us that all the crazy super science Batman stories from the past are (maybe?) side effects of Bruce's exposure to various drugs and sensory deprivation. Zurr En Arr is ONLY a planted keyword to shut him down, but his mind created false memories (non canonical stories?) to reinforce the implanted triggers.

Or Morrison is ruining the DCU and needs to be stopped!!!OMG!1!

Acid flashback? Morrison said that his Batman has been on the job for 15 years, but that EVERYTHING is n continuity. That just isn't possible, unless huge chunks of it only happened n Bruce's head.

You know, I actually wondered if I'd missed an issue when I read Batman this week. I think I might enjoy it more in one sitting, but as it was, I was just like, what the fuck's zur-en-arr?

I don't know. I haven't fully decided whether I like it or not.

Also, Tim has the ugliest shirt I've ever seen there.

Also, Tim has the ugliest shirt I've ever seen there.

I like to think it was in the script "Interior of a shed for no damned reason. One of Batman's sidekicks (we can figure it out later, draw it so it could be either of them) is wearing terrible raver gear and reading a notebook"

That'd be kind of awesome.

There is a jump from Batman getting captured (last issue) and Batman just waking up in an alley (this issue.) I had to check last issue to remind me that Bats got captured. Morrison usually reads better in one sitting because there is always way too much stuff to remember.

> what the fuck's zur-en-arr?

Zur En Arr is the keyword Dr. Hurt programmed into Batman to make him go bonkers when activated.

My theory, and also Elijah's apparently, is that the whole planet zur En Arr scenario only exist in Bruce's head and is his mind trying to remember what happened when he got brainwashed.

Bat-Mite... no clue. BAT-MITE IS ANOTHER BRUCE PERSONA!!!!

You know, I'm all for mysteries that throw me into things I don't understand. Stories with parts that seem utterly confusing and useless can be great in the end...like Watchmen ( ... )

> The problem is that he's writing the main universe batman in a fly by
> night story thats so utterly crazy yet continuity effect and then
> he'll leave it the second he's done.

I don't think it is going to affect continuity much, unless Thomas Wayne truly is the Black Glove, but that's just red herring.

> It's like the son of the bat story line he did.

I don't think that part is over. I am quite sure Damian and Thalia will show up again.

Frankly, other than Thalia being more femme fatale than her usual "Batman, my beloved" self, I do not notice any continuity ignoring at all here. I don't see any people being called Bob all of a sudden here.

Well, I can see your points to a degree, but... midusunknown July 4 2008, 07:05:51 UTC
I don't know, it could just be me...and all the customers and friends I have in comics being influenced or inclined to agree with me ( ... )

The thing is, based on past examples, even when he does crazy shit it gets undone asap. Dead Magneto anyone?

If you don't like the books, don't read em, and in a year Damien will have been a robot/clone/dream and Bruce will be boring and mopey again :-P

Honestly though, I prefer Morrison on his own stuff then when he plays in other peoples sand box. More Seaguy please.

I'm going to be fairly annoyed if, after all the hype and "OMG Batman changed 4evar!!1!!" crap we've been hearing since the first RIP solicits, the Batman laid to rest is just the Batman of Zur En Arr. Getting really tired of false threats of change and total shake-ups by the Big Two.

Hee, I liked the art. I'm weak for pretty men, what can I say? My first thought was that the biker was Jason, and became unduly excited for a few pages. *sigh* I thought the same about the black homeless dude. Was he dreamt up by Bruce?

With all the questions left unanswered, I'm excited to see how things turn out. Maybe with Sexy Bat-Mite/Batman slash.
