Stocking the Movie Shelf

Shelves, really.

So today I filled them up a little more. I now have in my grubby little hands:

Battlestar Galactica Season 4.0
Close Encounters of the Third Kind Blu-Ray Special Edition
Blade Runner Blu-Ray Special Edition
Renaissance

Yes, I spent too much. Yes, I only meant to get one. I couldn't decide between the five disc with four (!!) versions of ( Read more... )

I saw part of Renaissance at a friend's house a few weeks ago. It's a pretty intriguing film, what with the visual design, but I don't remember being too... uh, taken with the story line. Either it wasn't that good or it wasn't really memorable.

And oddly enough, I've never seen Blade Runner. My brother has read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", though, and he says they changed a few things. Philip K. Dick sounds like an author I could get into.

Close Encounters is an excellent film, and it makes me wonder what happened to ol' Spielberg. His recent movies aren't half as good as his old ones.

On an unrelated note: still haven't started on chapter four yet, and I'm trying to work up the creative juices to get going.

Renaissance really needs to be watched from start to finish. It's not perfect, by a long stretch, but visually it's quite appealing.

I'm surprised you haven't seen Blade Runner. Go see it. Rent it, buy it, whatever. It's full of high grade talent (Harrison Ford, Edward James Olmos, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer) at their best and what are still some amazing visuals that have held up very well to the test of time. It's also different enough from the book that the movie is a separate experience. It was the forerunner to a great deal of the current Sci-Fi genre, and for any lover of Sci-Fi it's enriching.

And I'll be glad to help beta Ch4 whenever you're ready with it.

You know why I think I've never been in love with Close Encounters? Richard Dreyfus. Something about his voice just gets on my nerves.

Anyway, having never actually seen anything on Blu-Ray, I have no idea what I'm missing, but I can imagine how gorgeous Blade Runner would look. That movie is visually stunning. I'm think you need to add The Fifth Element to your list of movies to get.

Blade Runner does, indeed, look amazing. None of the tell tale Special FX marks around the edges of the shots anymore. It's clear and perfect. Plus it has a Final Cut with some of the screwy dialog fixed so there's no more 4/5 skinjobs errors.

Edit: Just a quick thought -- I think it's the whiny New Yorker quality to his voice that makes some people dislike Dreyfuss. He's still a great actor. And you should see Mr. Holland's Opus if you haven't. He's brilliant in it.

The thing about Close Encounters that makes me feel the most and I have the most love for was that beautiful, beautiful score by John Williams. The man is a master composer.

I did see Mr Holland's Opus (long time ago) and I enjoyed it. I've seen a lot of his films, actually and liked them. He is a great actor, but I think the problem for me with Close Encounters was the combination of intense sorta crazy with whiny voice.

Well, I still have Blade Runner to keep you occupied. That movie is also made of win.
