The Joker's voice shook Harley from her reverie. She had been watching him intently for a while now. It was amazing that she could be silent for such a long time, but that was just what her man did to her. Her hands searched frantically all over her person for a watch but came up empty. She looked at his reflection in the mirror, sheer horror on her already-painted face, and said "... N-no, Puddin' I don't. But I can check! There's gotta be a clock around here somewhere ( ... )

While Harley frantically rifled through boxes and drawers for a watch, the Joker stared forward into the mirror. A few seconds ticked by. He tipped his head to the side as if tugging at a stiffness in his neck. When she began digging around in the drawer beside him, he turned to her slowly, cleared his throat and waited for Harley to meet his gaze. The look in his eyes was placid like a dark pool that may or may not be infested by sharks just below the surface.

The drawer closed suddenly with a forceful shove, nearly clipping Harley's fingertips.

"Looking for this?" The Joker produced a silver fob watch and tapped it with a gloved finger, making her aware of the time. Harley seemed to be tripping over herself for him more than usual these days, an annoying habit but not without its small amusement.

He was still regarding her with that mild look. "I hope you aren't nervous, Harley."

"N-nervous? No way, Mistah J. I ain't nervous. I just wanna make sure everything goes perfect on openin' night, ya know?" She smiled awkwardly, obviously unsettled by how calm he was. While the drawer closing was a start, it was still a miss. Not nearly cruel enough for his usual behaviour.

While a part of her remained tense and suspicious, the rest of her was starting to relax a bit. Maybe he was finally starting to settle down. Maybe he was so comfortable around her now that he didn't need to constantly inflict pain. Maybe he really did love her!

Harley visibly relaxed and beamed at her man, "I'm just worryin' about nothin', Puddin'. I've been a bit razzled lately. Blondie McBatkid isn't makin' things easy these days."

"Oh, it must be awful," he said in a manner that was too saccharine to be real. However, real or not, he was still giving Harley the time of day for once rather than blatantly turning his back on her and leaving her behind. And things were about to get even more surreal.

In a turn of events that defied sense, the Joker took Harley by the waist and turned her around as he pulled her backward onto his lap. His handling of her was almost loving, deceptively tender, in comparison to his usual mode of treating her. Their reflected image in the mirror looked like that of two lovers. The Joker's piercing gaze was trained on Harley's reflection.

"Why don't you tell your... Puddin'" --how he loathed that pet name-- "more about this 'Bat-kid'. Does she really know the Batman?"

The notion of Batman hiring underlings, much less children, struck him as unthinkable and downright hilarious. Patrick knew nothing about Gotham or Stephanie outside of what she allowed him, most likely to keep the knowledge safe from her enemy, but Harley had ( ... )
