It's that time of year again...

OK, my birthday is coming up in about a month and a half. And I really don't want anything, including birthday greetings when the day comes. The present I want from you people is the smug moral satisfaction of knowing I haven't inconvenienced my friends by making them memorize one more goddamned date, in return for similar consideration from you ( Read more... )

And it's nothing against people who love birthdays! I consider it an equal privilege to go out of my way to make my friends happy. I just don't like social obligations that are done mostly pro forma. And I definitely don't care about birthdays* of my own.

* My 37th will be an exception. But it's a long story. Celebrating outliving my dad.

This this this this this.

The people in my life have had many special birthdays. We celebrated them with great joy. But we celebrated because they wanted to, not because politeness mandated it.

I dunno if you're big on handheld games, but you should probably give The World Ends With You and Radiant Historia a shot on the DS. If you'd like, I can dig up some DS emulation for you: The World Ends With You in particular is so up your alley it's not even funny.

I give you three game recommendations, because I feel it is only polite to limit myself to three (I do not do this).

-Earth Reborn: The new king of Francotrash. If you want a game that explodes with theme and yet is actually playable, this needs to be in your collection. Bonus: Google destroys civilization.

-Ghost Stories: A co-op that's better than Pandemic? Fuck yeah, it is. Every game feels like a story, and win-or-lose, it's an awesome ride.

-Yomi: I was skeptical, but goddamn. Simple, elegant, tense... second only to Blue Moon in the 2 player card game category. (if you don't already own Blue Moon, get Blue Moon first. Yomi is wicked fun, but Blue Moon is fucking poetry.)

Play games!

I wanted to hate David Sirlin, but dammit, I've heard nothing but good things about Yomi and Puzzle Strike. If the guy can make the transition to a whole other gaming medium, there must be something to be said for Playing To Win.

I enjoyed Blue Moon in the freeware version I have, but I think it kinda spoiled me for having the entire set. I'm not quite into it enough to pick it up just so I can play with other people, but it's real tempting sometimes. Blue Moon City, on the other hand, is one of my go-to games for newbies. I don't know if I've seen other games with art resources that pretty.

We have Ghost Stories. Living in a geek household is still pretty sweet sometimes. :)

Our big obsession around the house now is Carcassone. I'm this close to just making my wish list a rundown of all the expansions. Also enjoying Tobago a lot more than I expected, and getting a kick out of Neuroshima Hex: 51st State. (Read: "Race For Beyond Thunderdome.")

I can second Yomi, it's pretty fun. David Sirlin always struck me as a bit of blowhard, but I will admit he has chops.

I can't second Puzzle Strike as is. The concept pushed most of my gaming buttons, but I think it is a little rough around the edges.

What's kinda funny about Sirlin's reputation is how shy he is in person. I spoke to him at an Evo volunteer dinner, and he was a doormouse of a dude.
